Autopsy Reveals Cause of Chief Inspector Anne Wanjiru Waiganjo's Death

An autopsy has revealed what killed Chief Inspector Anne Wanjiru Waiganjo. Wanjiru, who was the head of the Karen Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office, collapsed at a colleague’s farewell party at Baita Restaurant in Upperhill, Nairobi on July 3rd.

She was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to a police report.

A postmortem examination conducted on her body revealed the Karen DCIO died of deep vein thrombosis. The autopsy done at Kenyatta University Funeral Home on Thursday showed Wanjiru had a blood clot in her left leg which affected the functioning of her heart.

“She had deep vein thrombosis, which led to pulmonary embolism; a clot in the pulmonary artery,” said Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor said.

Wanjiru was fighting accusations of bigamy—the offense of marrying someone else while legally married. The offense attracts a prison sentence of up to five years.

She refuted these allegations, saying that the alleged first marriage had never existed. The two officers Wanjiru was alleged to be involved with were identified as Inspector David Murimi, and Prison Officer David Mbitu.

It is alleged that Waiganjo got married to Mbitu on April 4th, 2009 at Full Gospel Church in Njoro, Nakuru County. They are said to have separated a year later.

In 2012, she got married to Murimi, a police inspector who holds a lower rank than hers, at the Attorney General’s office. It was her divorce case with Murimi that went public.  In court papers, Wanjiru said her marriage was entirely loveless and irretrievably broken down, while Murimi accused her of bigamy.

“She had already contracted another marriage with David Mbitu Muchia, a prisons officer, on April 4, 2009, at Full Gospel Church, Njoro Town, Nakuru County,” Murimi said in court documents at the time.
