MPs Alarmed as USAID Contracts Blacklisted Company to Distribute HIV Drugs in Kenya
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is under fire for allegedly contracting a blacklisted company to distribute HIV and tuberculosis drugs in Kenya.
The US government agency is said to have rejected the services of Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) and awarded the contract for distribution of the life-saving drugs to a privately-owned American company called Chemonics.
The National Assembly Health Committee has raised questions over the award of the contract to Chemonics, which was blacklisted in Nigeria for involvement in financial fraud.
“We need to defend this country from manipulation. The ministry has told us that USAID is reluctant to meet them over the change of contractor to distribute ARVs. We have information that the company engaged by USAID to distribute ARVs has been accused of corruption in Nigeria due to neglect of staff in review of invoices,” said MP Joshua Kutuny, the vice-chairperson of the committee.
The Health Ministry said Kemsa had earlier been marked to distribute the medicines around the country on behalf of USAID but the agency backtracked and opted for Chemonics.
Chemonics was blacklisted in Nigeria after it emerged that it hired Zenith Carex as a sub-contractor, which defrauded grant programs of $3 million by systematically inflating invoices for distributing commodities to warehouses and health facilities.
A probe done by Global Fund established that Chemonics approved and paid Zenith’s fraudulent invoices for over two years.

I highly recommend USAID to ignore the National Assembly Health Committee MPIGs, or cancel the contract altogether. The government had lost the fight on corruption and the president has clearly admitted numerous times. Bure kabisa.

This is corruption 101. Are they that blind?? So the red flag was KEMSA to me...Once I read KEMSA on this mwakilishi screen, man i instinctively tensed up as many alert kenyans also seemed to have sensed. That shameful agency needs to be shut down and restore wananchi health, kenyan dignity and of course stolen money. The consequences of screwing around with HIV are dire. KEMSA can reuse needles or simply replace the meds with fake stuff and sell on blk market. The public faith in them is lost.
Now the USAID on reading seems to be using a crooked sub in NG that at worst didnt pay bills...we dont know the details, but that seems as lesser crime besides kenyan gava never pays bills on time.
MPs are drunk on power and like a whore will always open up their legs to whoever has money to use them, abuse them and then dump them when done or in this case even leave them with that disease that just keeps on and never stops. Keep your eyes open for this new so-called National Assembly Health Committee and be prepared to take anything they say with a grain of salt or you and your kin, relas and village will pay dearly for their makosas as they wreck and plunder their receipient county health depts.
