[VIDEO] Uproar after Woman Was Undressed for Being Indecently Dressed

Early this week, a group of men pounced on a middle-aged woman and stripped her naked for allegedly being inappropriately dressed.

The incident which has since attracted the attention of the Director of Public Prosecution, Keriako Tobiko has elicited various reactions from a cross section of Kenyans, with womens rights lobby groups expressing their disgust at the wanton violation of their freedom to dress.

K24 reporter Ruth Mulandi explores the question of just what qualifies as decent dressing and what can be said to be indecent.

What a a terrible thing to happen in a so called civilized world. I guess some people are yet to be civilized. Who gave this barbarians the right to be fashion police? How would they feel if their loved ones were humiliated in public like that?
Just like any woman in Kenya has the right to  dress the way she pleases, men,and should I add women have the right to look or not to. If any laws are broken, please let the justice system take care of that.

With all the troubles facing this country, dressing is the least of our problems.

My suggestion is that these individuals should also be ashamed by being stripped naked and paraded in the streets for one hour, and ask the how they feel after the mission is a complished... The same "animals" would probably stand and watch a person getting mugged and do nothing about it.This is one way of trying to control women in their lives. Please dont treat mature women like kids.Let them enjoy the freedom man have enjoyed for so long.

Max pple need to dress appropriate. If u want to dress solo tight n too short stay in yr he's or compound but once u step out to the public I don't understand what ur upto.Kenya remain an African state not western so whoever dresses inappropriate should expect to face the society right on.That ready started throwing cursing words to the youth so they acted. If she kept quietly am sure they couldn't have gone to that extreme..Africans we remain stupid to copy how west dresses n they don't have culture or behaviuors. So this should b a lesson to our daughters

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

You are the stupid one to voice your lack of learning to an entire 7 billion Pple on the www. Africans have always been naked since beginning of time, btw my great grandma wore g-strings every day, and walked through nairobi during long distant trade route!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Asante Mkenya hasili.

The problem I have is the way she was treated in public. If she broke anylaws, let some one prosecute her. What kind of people/country would we be if anybody purpotedly wronged took law into their hands? I trust that we are a country of laws.

Secondly, what is indecent dressing? Iam not bothered by awoman wearing a mini skirt,or hot pants. Infact I love to-eye-candy- once in a while, and go on with my business.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@Mkenya Halisi, you can denounce your Kenyan Citizenship and move to Middle East if this has caused you much grief! Kenya is a progressive society and NO LONGER A PATRIARCHAL nor a MISOGYNIST society. Women are getting more and more empowered and they hav

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

You are one ignorant fool! No excuse in this world could justify such uncouth behavior! That woman could have been walking naked out in the street, and no one should lay a finger on her! No "if's" or "buts"!
Only in an uncivilized society would this happen!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@Mhalisi - Isn't the "middle class" glorifying everything Western. The last time I checked, why should dressing like a Westerner excluded for all things Americans that the new middle class are yearning for . You cannot have your cake and eat it too , no?

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

More proof of the African savages, so primitive that no amount of universities or churches can eradicate! You can remove the savage from the jungle, but not jungle from the savage!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Ukweli if u have daughters or sisters, cousins n wear too short n they are raped by this monsters, who r u going to blame????I guess putting on tooo short n too tight will isn't appropriate but thoz who do it should b ready to face our African public head on....so u guys continue to call pple primitive.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

MKenya hasili,
just ask yourself who is breaking the law here. Is it the rapist,or the woman dressed in scanty clothing? Iam sure you will agree with me that is the rapist breaking the law. Indeed if someone commits an act of rape,he is truly amonster, just like a burger who breaks into ahouse and chops the owner. The burrger is breaking the law. The good thing is that most men control there urges to commit crime, and those who cannot should face consequences of their acts.Yes I would feel very bad if one of my relatives were to be raped, but I would feel better if the rapist is jailed for 50 year, and kept away from hamming other innocent law abiding wananchi.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Your thought process is absolutely ludicrous and extremely dangerous and has no place in a healthy society. Make no mistake, a sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. Someone evil has to act to commit rape. No one forces that choice. If seeing an enticing woman, a drunk and mentally ill woman will lead you to conclude instantaneously that ooh, “I’ve got to rape her,” then, you obviously lack moral and ethical compass.

Mark you, majority of assaulted women were not dressed sexily, including women draped in head-to-toe burqas . Interestingly, veiled women are blamed, too: “He must have seen a bit of her ankle, wrist, hair, neck, or eyes… Oh, how could any man resist the temptation 99.999% covered head to toe in a burga!!!!? . Provocative dressing or lack of - is not an incitement nor justifiable legal defense for rape.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Come on police! What health society? Dressing indecently in NOT socially healthy and so this woman escaped being stoned to death by those who really know what a healthy society entails.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Wearing short has nothing to do with it, these kenyan men think they can control women, yet they are they ones with lack of self control, dipping in anything that moves! Ushenzi kabisa!next time am in nairobi I'll walk around in a bikini, let them bring it on!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Let all Kenyan women have a bikini day. These men sleep with women every day and now they want act like they have never seen a female skin. Don't they know that women strip naked when they give birth to them. What else do we to hide.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Did you go to school? Rape is about power not sex. I hope you do not have daughters. I would hate myself if I was related to you

Please God dont let this man have daughters...please I beg you

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@Mkenya, you are sickening to insinuate that a goon who can't control his animalistic sexual desires should rape a woman simply because she chose to wear a short dress, skirt or pants. Most men in Kenya have more senses than those goons who stripped a wom

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@mkenya halisi your level of understanding and the comments you make speak a lot about you. Your no better than the actual perpetrators on the video stripping that lady. I concur totally with Maxiley, its my dress, my choice. No one has a right to put a

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Haaaaaa u guyz dress the way u want n u will face the public period!!!Instead of commenting here calling me names, just dress n walk that way in kenya n the same thing will happen 2u.Am not encouraging wacha happened but in our costitution there is "code of dressing especially in public".I have 3 daughters for those who r asking but I always teach them how to dress especially out there but when they bcome adults n out of my hse I don't care how they dress juu they will b making such decisions by themselves. If they dress like that lady it will b upto them if they face such mob.Sorry that's the reality;pple need to learn how to leave with their mistakes

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Wacha upuzi wewe Mkenya halisi. It's depressing to even imagine that you are actually a father! So do you tell your children that rapists have a right to attack and rape them if they are dressed provocatively?!! Why argue with someone who is obviously a fool!? If the lady broke the law, why not follow the right chain of legal action?

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

@vicious......spoken like a weak minded am going to go with man....just a weak man!Can stand the truth..Remember this comment when people strip U naked because of breaking an alleged dress code!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Hello Ndugu Mkenya hasili,

Thanks for putting some light or should i say elucidate on what the constitution says about"code of dressing".However you fail to mention what the dress code entails. Is it  three inches above the knee?Is a man walking without a T shirt indescent? Is a Turkana clad in ashuka, partly showing her thighs  against the code you mention?Let's say all of that is against the dress code. What is the punishment to be meted out to the code breakers?I bet you that the constitution does not tell the public to take the law into their hands and strip naked the offending party.

It amazes me how you have embraced the western way of dressing at the same time condemning others who do same. why dont you advocate for africans/kenyans to go back and wear patches of skin to only cover their private parts the way our ancestors did?

If you took time to mind your own dressing and let other people worry about how they dress, and let the law decide who is offending who, we would not be making an issue of this matter on this" distinguished Mwakilishi forum",of whil I have come to love.

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Please lets respect our sis, mothers, nieces and friends. If sh was not naked wacha avae whatever she wants. Lets respect our women. twenty years ago our mothers would not even were trouusers, now its a trend. Let women be women

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

Kenyan men stop attacking Kenyan women!!!... Men who attack women generally have no guts to attack another man.Their cowards!Cowards attack defenseless people.

This is wrong.A pack of men descending on a woman and u can't stop terrorist, thieves, murders and drug dealers but U attack one defenseless woman because U don't like her dressing.......what type of nonsense is this. ...have several seats...I have no patience for cowards!

Mwakilishi     Mon, 11/23/2009 @ 12:16am

The unfortunate reason this sad case of undressing the woman in public happened is indicative of a failed judiciary. The people responsible for this act know very well that they will not be arrested, prosecuted, fined or even jailed in a country where members of the judiciary can be bribed and easily throw the case into the trash cans!

Even in conservative Saudi Arabia, this undressing a woman in public could not take place.
