Kenya Posts Record Single-Day Covid-19 Positive Cases, Raising Tally to 887

57 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Kenya, making it the highest number of infections recorded in the country in a single day.

The 57 new cases were detected from 2,198 samples tested in the past one day, Government Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna said in a statement on Sunday, May 17th.

This raises the total number of positive cases in Kenya to 887. The 57 new infections are distributed across Mombasa (35), Nairobi (17), Kajiado (3), Kwale (1), and Kitui (1).

34 out of the 57 new cases are males while 23 are females, all aged between two and 61 years. 

“Cumulatively, we have so far tested 43,712 samples,” the statement reads.

In Mombasa, the 35 cases are spread out in Mvita (22), Likoni (4), Changamwe (3), Nyali (3), Kisauni (2) and Jomvu (1).

In Nairobi, Kibra registered the highest number (9), 2 in quarantine facilities, 2 in Eastleigh and one each in Aga Khan Hospital, Kamulu, Dandora, and Pangani.

The government also said 12 Tanzanian truck drivers were turned away after they tested positive for the virus at the Lunga Lunga and Taveta border points.

At the same time, the number of Covid-19 recoveries in the country increased to 313 after 12 additional patients were discharged from the hospital while the death toll from the disease remains at 50.
