Kenyan Man Busted Trafficking Python Fined Sh2 Million Or Else Serve a Two-Year Prison Term

A 33-year-old Kenyan man who was on Wednesday caught trafficking a 2.3-meter long snake weighing 10 kilograms was on Friday fined Sh2 million or else serve a two-year prison term.

Karissa Iha had stashed the live python in a black suitcase and was waiting to cross the Likoni Ferry Channel in Mombasa when he was intercepted. This was after an X-ray scan of his suitcase showed the snake tucked in the travel case.

Appearing before Mombasa Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet, Karissa pleaded guilty to the offense of being in a possession of a wildlife species without a permit.

In his ruling on Friday, magistrate Adet said the suspect knew that he required a permit before handling the python, having previously worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“I find that the accused, having worked with the KWS ought to have known that a permit was required in such circumstance,” the judgment read.

He was facing the charge of possession of a wild animal without a permit contrary to Section 95 (c) of the Wildlife Conservation Act.

It is not clear where the man was taking the snake but pythons are known to fetch a tidy sum for their skin, according to locals.

Didn’t you know the poor gets the stiffest penalty in court? The man was just risking his life carrying a verminous beast for uchawi!

It is not like he stole money from the public coffers, like many politicians do.

I don’t even know if I call this daring guy a thief! The judge should just tell the poor man to return the mamba snake back to the bush and go look for an alternative way to earn some money!

Guy was caught last week. Sentenced today. Wish you had the same zeal in Waititu, NYS and all the other cases concerning theft of public money. To be poor in Kenya is a crime.

What if he was hungry and needed it for food. People hunt deers and antelopes everyday for food and they don’t get arrested.

Inspekta Mwala kills some gets 30 k fine, Jaguar the MP kills two citizens pays 40 K, Babu Owino shoots to kill innocent DJ gets Bail on a payment plan like mortgage, Obado, Waititu, Mwilu. kidero, Sonko all out even when evidence shines they are criminals and belong in jail. I am just amazed by the SPEED this Rogue and corrupt Kenyan Judicial system took to convict this young Man. Other cases are almost forgotten and non existence. Bure Kabisa
