US Provides Support to Kenyans Affected by Mudslides

The United States government is providing financial support to the victims of the West Pokot landslides that have left more than 50 people dead and many others displaced.

On Tuesday, West Pokot Governor Prof. John Lunyangapuo said more than 10,000 displaced people are sheltering in 15 camps within Parua, Muino and Nyarkulian areas.

Women, children, and men in the camps are living without basic necessities such as food, clean water, shelter, clothing, beddings, and medication, according to Daily Nation.

As of Tuesday morning, the death toll stood at 52 with at least 20 other people still unaccounted for following the mudslides that hit the area over the weekend.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths, injuries, and damage from the mudslides triggered by heavy rains in West Pokot on November 23. Our profound sympathies go out to all affected by this disaster,” the US Embassy in Nairobi said.

“We commend the work of local authorities, humanitarian officials, and all who are responding to the emergency.”

‘The U.S. government, through its partnership with the @KenyaRedCross, is providing financial support directly to the affected people of West Pokot.”
