US Media Editor Angers Online Users for Labeling Kipchoge’s Marathon Record Fake

An editor for an American media house has received a backlash from social media users for terming Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge’s Saturday marathon record as ‘fake.’

Kipchoge, 34, made history in Vienna, Austria after becoming the first man to complete a 42-kilometer race in less than two hours. He crossed the finish line in 1 hour 59 minutes 40 seconds.

In an opinion piece titled 'The greatest, fakest world record', Paul Bisceglio, an editor for the Atlantic media organization opined that Kipchoge ran the fastest time ever over the marathon distance, but did not 'run a marathon'.

"Such an extensive level of support, combined with the fact that Kipchoge wasn’t actually competing against anybody, pushed the event outside of official marathon conditions and prevented his performance from counting as a true record," Bisceglio wrote.

"The organisers were fully aware of this; the event, as Outside magazine aptly referred to it, is perhaps best understood as an “exhibition marathon.”

"The organisers scouted out a six-mile circuit along the Danube River that was flat, straight, and close to sea level," he continued.

"The pacesetters, a murderers’ row of Olympians and other distance stars, ran seven-at-a-time in a wind-blocking formation devised by an expert of aerodynamics."

“Yesterday a human ran under two hours in the marathon. It was an extraordinary achievement—but not in the way you might think. I had some thoughts!” he went on to say in a tweet.

Bisceglio’s opinion piece rubbed online users the wrong way as evidenced in the comments on his tweet.

@AfroMelanated said: "Never have I seen so many words put together to make an incoherent argument. He had unfettered access to his favourite carbohydrate-rich drink" Are you saying mursik gave him unfair advantage? Screaming!"

@kenhesser replied: "What a garbage take. Marathon WRs are always going to be “tainted” by the conditions, course, etc. Calling the achievement “fake” is offensive."

@jackaloh wrote: "The author should be reminded that the current World Marathon Record is held by the same person. He was not running to break his own record but to inspire and show others it can be done in under two hours."

@Kamungah stated: "What a waste of your weekend. If writing is your talent, I wonder how much technological assistance you'd need to be any good. I haven't seen any claim that it's a marathon world record, or dismissal of the tech at play. It is purely a man's attempt at breaking a barrier."

@FakeFan50 posed: "Good God, the tone of this article is so bitter I couldn't help but think the author is a bit jealous he will never get close to a pace this fast."

@TuJadili quipped: "Kenyans used to run without shoes before all these hi-tech shoes were invented. They still won. You won't spoil for Kipchoge the way you guys whitewashed Semenya's success."

@Alibash_Mohamed reacted: "Yeah. He was carried in a vehicle and he had wings attached to him. So he flew! Fakest!"

@PeterNyaundi said: "As if Americans landed on the moon barefoot. Silly."

@thechelanga noted: "Focus on Trump impeachment. American Media has nothing positive on black achievements!"

My question to this editor is, was it 42k that Eliud ran,or was it less?
Secondly, who in the world would have kept pace with Eliud at 4.35 miles a minute?
To label this "fake" is to negate all the effort that went in to making this endeavor possible.I also wonder what is his or her intent in pouring cold water on this historic event.Had Eliud failed, what would have been his response?Iam sure that was what he was hoping for.
Unfortunately freedom of speech allows for stupid remarks-unintended consequence,in my opinion.

Kenyans are suppose to praise a so called "white man"- Iguassu for just speaking 5 Kenyan languages but put down our own so called "black man" Kipchoge who wins a world marathon. This is what we call fake media!!!

Paul Bisceglio....please Google this..."wacha ujinga".
If it was a white guy, this could be in every TV channel across the globe...
But we're all proud of our KIPCHOGE.

When a black person achieves something , along comes a white man who negates that. Look at how they treat Serena Willimas? Meghan Markle married a prince - and the hate is insurmountable( she diluted every white girl dream on marrying a price :-) haha. Black people needs to stop waiting for approval or acknowledgement from white world , do you , do like Tyler Perry - if they do not produce your movies - go build yourself a top of class studios and produce and cast whoever you want! If we all thought like him, Lord have Mercy!. We should create Marathon for Africans , held in Africa and the rest if they do not want to come over and compete - they can have their own. No more harsh conditions to compete with people who would care less. Ever watch any event Olympics etc and see how our African competitors get zero coverage or accolades even if they break records? We need to invest our $$$ to our people, our things, out countries , our everything!

Well said @formerly guest 2.The IAAF now wants to do away with 3000 meters steeplechase, and 5000 meters, from the lucretive diamond league. If that had happened before the recently concluded WC in Doha, kenya would have 2gold medal, and probably ranked 12th instead of 2nd in the world. Remember who dominates these races -east africans. Now,lets be real here, doyou think if these events were dominated by America or Britain, that kind of talk would exist?.Yes creating our own "diamond "league would ensure we include events that we like,or dominate. And about doing away with the races africans dominate ihave not heard any outcry.Hopefully in the spirit of inclusion, Iaaf will leave things as they are.

Very well said. We have to learn to ignore the white mans yapping and do our thing. As you have stated, they have frustrated Serena for so long but the girl is as strong and stubborn as ever and she will be the GOAT by the time she is done. They are not even talking about Tyler Perry's humongous ingenuity anymore. And just when they think they have it contained, Simon Biles obliterates all records and sets her own, then Kipchoge comes along and does the unimaginable and Kosgey breaks the women's marathon record. Who needs their praise? As far as I am concerned, if a movie or any form of entertainment does not have one who looks like me, ain't worth wasting my time on. Tyler Perry has a fan right here.

the poor author doesn't need to commend our runners from Kenya. In fact it wasn't until Kenyan runners started winning marathon races that the so called "white scientists" decided to change science books. Before it was agreed that black folks have denser bones hence stood no chance in winning any race. Anyway, such a waste of time, he should have been a man or gay enough to challenge kipchoge

the problem is it was a person from the wrong race. otherwise they would be all praises. foolish people with pens

I think not competing against anybody has even less advantage than if there was. Because he was only watching his own pace, keeping it at a level distance by the pacemakers, but no one to push his limits. It was a test of possibilities, and not a marathon, the organizers pretty much knew that.
