Those without Health Insurance, Ability to Pay Medical Bills to be Denied US Visas

Individuals without health insurance or the ability to pay for medical bills are set to be denied United States visas, President Trump’s administration announced on Friday.

A proclamation by President Trump said consular officers will only be allowed to issue visas to would-be immigrants who prove they "will not impose a substantial burden" on the US health care system once they become permanent residents.

Trump justified the move by claiming that legal immigrants are three times as likely as US citizens to lack health cover, making them a burden on hospitals and taxpayers.

"Lawful immigrants are about three times more likely than United States citizens to lack health insurance," Trump said in the proclamation.

"Immigrants who enter this country should not further saddle our healthcare system, and subsequently American taxpayers, with higher costs."

The new measure will take effect on November 3rd, 2019.

“The United States government is making the problem worse by admitting thousands of aliens who have not demonstrated any ability to pay for their health care costs,” Trump wrote.

The measure primarily targets immigrants seeking to join their families in the US, a White House official who spoke under condition of anonymity told The New York Times.

Trump made cracking down on immigration a key part of his 2016 presidential campaign platform. Since assuming office, he has instituted wide-ranging immigration law reforms, while tasking authorities with conducting mass deportations of illegal foreigners.

@Kora kanini, stop the boasting. So many seniors, children and disabled people depend on Medicare & medicaid. You do not know what the future holds for you. You can get an accident and be disable or get a sick child etc.

@Kora, nothing is long overdue, you seem not to understand US Immigration system. Permanent residents via lottery have to file an affidavit of support (AOS), they cannot claim those benefits, else they can or the sponsor will foot bill, nothing new here. This also applies to those who have adjusted status e.g., through marriage. Other immigrants that are not permanent residents cannot apply for those benefits, several forms of ID are required to ensure that those individuals qualify for those benefits. This is just a newsbite to fire up the base, nationalists etc., and confuse others who do not understand. While legal immigrants after five years or once they become citizens can use the services noted above, note that other immigrants e.g., refugees do not require an "AOS", and when accepted by the US,the US assumes responsibility and they use this services right away. As such, they can "abuse"the system if that is what you think, however, just like social security, the intent was that they will also in teh future make contribution to the system. But are there other people/individuals who genuinely abuse the system, YES without doubt. However, there are rules/laws both federal and state to prevent and/or minimize abuse, they just have to be enforced.Food stamps, medicaid and medicare are there to help those who are having a difficult time, to assist them to get back in shape and minimize poverty. When applied as originally intended without abuse, these are genuine and necessary programs for those who are having a difficult time, making a headline with statements just like this is political.

@kora kanini...that was a none intellectual post. Statistics show white America has the the largest number of foodstamps and Medicaid/Medicare use NOT immigrants or African Americans. Foodstamps is an American way of life as apple pie...we all moved to the states to better our lives let's not forget where we came from and how we got here at one point.

I don’t think this lady Kora has lived in America to understand this country well. Firstly a majority of “Americans” on food stamps are children below the age of 13. Welfare in developed economies is actually put in place to avoid negative effects on the economy. Poverty can have a multiplicative effect if unchecked. In other words your policies like those of the guy who shall remain nameless would actually have a negative effect on the overall economy. In fact most ignoramus assume that people struggling or needing a helping hand are few and far between, that’s untrue. This is a very large population of people. Make their life difficult and watch everything go down the drain. What you’re spewing is nothing but hate. Shame on you.
