We Are Only Accepting Old Kenyan Currency, US Embassy in Nairobi Tells Visa Applicants

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has told visa applicants that the Embassy is only accepting old Kenyan currency notes at the moment.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Embassy said they are still developing procedures to accept the new Kenyan banknotes unveiled early this month by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

“Until these procedures are in place, consular applicants will only be able to pay for services using the previous Kenyan shillings,” read the statement.

The Embassy also pointed out that applicants can continue to pay for services through credit cards.

It also said that it will notify applicants when they can start paying using the new currency notes.

The new banknotes are already in circulation, with the old 1000-shilling notes set to be fully phased out by October 1st, 2019.

“All the older Ksh.1000 series shall be withdrawn. All persons have until October 1, 2019, to exchange these notes, after which the older ones will cease to be legal tender,” said CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge while unveiling the new currency.

This is a strong indicator of an unpreparedness within this government. How do you roll-out your own currency and even your own government institutions are not equipped to use them? I hope all the embassies around the world have this notice well established in their websites so people don't waste time going to the embassy thinking only the new currencies can be accepted only to find that it's the other way round! I'm willing to bet that even after October 1, 2019 they'll still not be ready to accept the new bank notes, which will mean they will only be accepting lower denominations and credit cards.

"still developing procedures to accept the new Kenyan banknotes"
I sense bad politics or sabotage with this embassy. Let's see whether others follow suit. This embassy should be refunding the Kenyans citizens pesa yao once denied visas before poking their long noses on the new currency.
