Desperate Kenyan University Graduate Becomes Watchman at His Former High School

A Kenyan university graduate has resorted to working as a security guard in his former high school after his efforts to secure a better job were unsuccessful.

In an interview with KTN, a dejected Ernest Maiki Abraham, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Statistics degree from the University of Eldoret, said he failed to secure a job in his profession despite making numerous applications to various corporates.

Desperate to put food on the table for himself and his siblings, Maiki decided to take any job that comes his way.

He got a job at his former secondary school, where he mans the institution's main gate, earning a meager monthly income.

Maiki left RCEA Kuinet Secondary School in 2011 after scoring B+ in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

“I never at any point in my life did I picture myself in this position, I have desperately done all I can in vain, which is when I let life take its course,” he told KTN.

He said he has never received a response to any of his multiple applications letters to technology companies, multinational corporates and even supermarkets.

“Inafika mahali unakata tamaa, kwanza nikiwa University of Eldoret vitu mingi ilifika mpaka inanikazia wakati wa graduation. Inafika mpaka unakata tamaa kwa sababu maisha imekuwa ngumu,” he added.

One of his former high school teachers said they are ashamed since Maiki was one of the most hardworking and bright students the school has produced.

“As a teacher, I feel like my efforts were wasted," he noted.

OurCountry is modeled as a consumer society where every aspect of our lives is served by the west. Infrustracture, clothing, foods: fish, sugar, maize, rice, furniture, merchinary and automobiles come from the western countries. We do nothing for ourselves and that is why we lack jobs for our own people. Any one who has some kind of job consummate to this guy's qualifications should call him up and give him a decent job. Throw him a life line if you can please. Hang on bro, one day we will change all these misery after we kick out all the corrupt theives and robbers who think not about the future of our nation. He didn't have to spend money and years in schooling to do what is does today! Shame on our leaders and our educational system.

This is the result of "Dead end education" . Wrong policies by our government since independence. Educating our people without thinking what we want from them at the end of the road. Where is the "Balance Sheet" of our investment in dead end education.
The Kenyan government should hire this guy (with a background in statistics) to calculate how much is spent by every citizen in this dead end education and what is gained afterward (where is the return on investment) . If there is no return on investment, the government need to change course. We as Kenyan's need to determine what type of education fits our society and stop the ugly business of copy and paste of the western style of education. Since independence, we have adopted the " one size fits all" not just in education, names, religion, foreign foods, clothes etc and in this whole business we are the losers and those foreigners are the beneficiaries. This lack of vision for our people must stop. No more Dynasties.

Do not give up brother. Do that job as if there is not tomorrow. That is where you will meet with people who will connect you to better jobs and companies. God has a reason for everything. Some people start as janitors and end up being CEO of big companies. Do not listen to negative people. Mind your own business. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

@Kenya, yep I agree. He is better off than that graduate sitting in the house waiting for a job to come by. Look, he is already in the news! Statistics is NOT useless at all. This subject helps you to analyze data, understand it deep enough to make predictions. You can tell authentic vs dubious data and this can really help you avoid pitfalls especially in business management. With all the scams going on today, knowledge in statistics is indispensable!

Yaani it is said that Kenya has the most promising economy in East Africa yet graduates work as watchmen over 50 years since independence there are less jobs available for the so called educated than there were at independence what did these politicians and the so called learned elite do if anything.

Ndugu @Rai:

Ours is an education system that is rotten and useless, churning out graduates who are only ready to work in white color jobs. When these jobs are hard to come by, they will take up anything because they were never taught how to think creatively. I would advise this lad to take his first salary, resign and start out on his own even if it means roasting maize on the roadside. He may as well need to read a book called "Think And Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill.

Starting on a low footing doesn’t mean you’ll not make it. To the contrary, you’ll succeed in life like nobody else because you’ve already demonstrated humility. I know this may not comfort you much but I’d like you to know that I started off kwa mijengo even with my Masters degree and an advanced certificate in a certain field. Then nikafanya mechanic and farming, for years. Eventually when I got a job in my line of career, I took it for a while before I got bored and I went back to jua kali where I’d started making much much better money, far more than my old college mates who were in their chosen professions. More than 20 years later, I have absolutely zero regrets and I am grateful things went way they did. Utatoboa ndugu

Education should be relevant to the current market needs. That's what lacks in Kenya. One is better off with a certificate in plumbing and welding. I am ex USA diaspora and I can tell you there's alot of stress out here. Depression is at an all time high.. We need to get creative or move to Ethiopia where stuff works.

Ndugu yetu @MjuAji:

That is not desperation, media. He is doing public service as he awaits his day. It is coming. That aside, our government is to blame for mismanagement of resources, thus unemployment for the youth and able bodied Kenyans. Fanya kazi kijana wa mathee.

Abraham look further for opportunities. The canadians are looking for someone with your type of eduction. Try it. They are begging for engineers and Mathematicians like you

Mos (not verified)     Mon, 05/27/2019 @ 02:22pm

I agree with MailiSaba, look outside Kenya. Try applying for a job elsewhere, but then again most companies these days look at experience. Am sure even Canada looks at experience when they offer residency to immigrants for job purpose. Advise to college students, get an internship related to your career before you graduate. Also expand your network while in college. When my buddies were taking long summer breaks kujienjoy I took Engineering internships and this helped me land a job even before graduating college. Job opportunities are different depending on where you are but the key thing is being strategic and laying the grounds before you graduate.
