President Kenyatta Wants Civil Servants Barred from Owning Private Businesses

President Kenyatta wants civil servants barred from owning private businesses in the latest plan by the government in the fight against corruption.

To achieve this, Kenyatta has directed Attorney-General Paul Kihara to draft a bill that will legally prohibit public servants from private business.

President Uhuru says the law will help tackle the crisis of conflict of interest, which is blamed for fueling corruption.

“State or public officers will have one choice: Serve in the public arena or go and do private business!” said Kenyatta in his speech during the just concluded anti-corruption conference at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

Kenyatta has affirmed his commitment in the war against graft, stating that no one will be spared in the ongoing purge.

“No person is beyond the reach of the arm of the law no matter how powerful and influential they perceive themselves to be,” says Kenyatta.

He has further vowed to ensure that all proceeds of corruption stashed locally and overseas will be recovered.

“No matter which corner of the globe you hide stolen funds from Kenya, that illicit wealth is no longer beyond the reach of the Kenyan government. Step by step we shall win this war.”

At the same time, President Uhuru has accused the judiciary of frustrating the war on corruption by granting injunctions to graft suspects.

“Our courts must stop the practice of using injunctions against investigation of corrupt activities, issuing these orders makes it easier for them to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses,” says Kenyatta.

Bad idea Mr.President.Let anybody who can create business do so,and have afew Kenyans employed. We have dishonest civil servants, and we have dishonest private servants.
Like many have said before, rules, and laws to combat corruption are in place,if only enforced, and the big fish imprisoned, plus all illgotten wealth confiscated.
Infact, lets forget international backlash, and condemnation, and hang them in public.Trust me this will drastically reduce corruption overnight to less than 1%.You want an effective way, there is one.

Idiots will always be idiots. You own how many private business? All these cosmetic drunk ideas you come up with are a mockery of people’s intelligence. There’s only one solution for corruption, JAIL. LOCK EM UP, recover the loot then fine the shit outta them.

I am with you Uhuru on this one. Choose public or private sector. Hopefully all who own businesses can exit the gova to go and create more jobs, stop corrupt tendencies of double dealing. Lets START on a clean slate.

@ Mugikuyu, how is that going to stop a corrupt civil servant from accepting a bribe to give someone ajob,or promotion? Its corruption we are fighting, and it exists in both public and private sectors. Only laws adhered to and applied fairly will end corruption. That is short of hanging the corrupt crooks

Uhuru is trying to reduce the conflict of interest which would help curb corruption or minimize it at best. Doctors operating their clinics when they should be on the job or diverting medications to their clinics is corrupt. Those working in say road department and using their influence to acquire tenders for their companies thats corruption. Those are JUST examples. Bear in mind this is a president who is not getting a lot of help from judiciary either because they are corrupt (cartels) or prosecutors are poorly equipped, without security, poorly paid and constantly intimidated by criminal lawyers. Rule of law entails having a strong willed judiciary and Maraga is yet to wake up.
After all how can you give the government your all( working full time) and give your biz 100%? One has to suffer.Lets be realistic.

No sir. No society with justice would deny a decent man/woman a line of income just because they know how, provided it is not illegally or unethically acquired. What we need is enforcement of they law, ethical practices and state officers to declare any conflict of interest. If there is no conflict of interest in the private engagement they have, document and approve it and let it be known to the employer as part of the record. Of course Monkey business will still be there but so will be the law to deal with that. But applying a blanket policy borrowed from some Ndegwa report of 1970s is quite retrogressive.

The Chief Justice speech seems to be a kind of a person who enjoys contradictions at any given circumstance.

His defense against the Judiciary sounds the lack of will is minimal as the given reasons are conclusively challenge towards the DCI and DPP.

I think he should STOP frustrate Kenyans on the fighting of this stubborn devil.
