Nairobi's Marble Arch Hotel Earmarked for Demolition

The Nairobi County government has earmarked Nairobi's Marble Arch Hotel for demolition.

In a notice, City Hall has given the hotel management 14 days to stop further illegal occupation and development of the property.

Governor Mike Sonko's administration has also ordered the hotel management to submit development approvals for the property, including occupation certificate, to City Hall for verification.

“You are hereby required to provide development approvals to City Hall for verification including occupation certificate,” reads the notice.

The three-star hotel located along Lagos Road in Nairobi is owned by billionaire Mike Maina, who is behind Nyama Villa Estate's demolitions.

On Thursday, a phone call recording of Governor Sonko insulting Maina for orchestrating demolition of several buildings in Nyama Villa estate leaked online.

In the recording, Sonko accuses Maina of carrying out the demolitions without engaging his office and vows to go after the businessman's property, which he termed as illegally constructed.

Sukari, true, he’s a bit rough on the edges, however, at least somome is fighting for common folk, this has never happened in Kenya.

This maybe a grudge between Sonko and Maina. Maybe. It could also mean exactly what the story says. That Marble Arch is built without approval. If so, it can be regularlized. Or demolished if there are structural issues. Moving from this, What I know, is that there is way too much impunity in my country of birth. It annoys me. We have laws. But they are often bent to serve the privileged. Those with money; a lot of which was stolen through irregular tenders Or plain thuggery. We have people trying to do the right thing. But they end up being the victims. It is wrong, and that is where I say I agree with many like Guest1, Imara, Dirty Diana, Koni Hanene, Mugikuyu, and many others when they admonish this clueless government of ours, which never seems to prosecute lawlessness even when the evidence is overwhelming. My only wish is that there would arise a charimatic leader from our midst. Like MLK, or Mandela, or Nkrumah. Or even someone like Mohammed Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank. He knew empowering will women was the answer to eliminating poverty. To give us impetus to fight for country. It put it on the right path.

I support Sonko in this all the way and appreciate how he handled this thug who was trying to sweet talk him with "my brother" crap after having demolished another brothers house in Kayole. Very devilish 😈. Sonko keep up the good work. Sonko however inexperienced he may be, he has his heart in the right place for the poor and might very well be our MLK. He will master his job with time.

If sonko is so sure that Maina is flaunting the law, why not have him jailed? That's the only way to slow down the Mainas of Kenya.
The effective way to handle this is to speak authoritatively, commandingly, and lower the boom on Maina. In other words, speak softly, but carry abig stick.
Speaking insultingly, and disparagingly like sonko did only makes his opponents question is IQ.Having said this, anywhich way that would bring welcome results to wananchi is fine by me.

The amount of disparaging words used by someone are not a reflection of their IQ. That is what a white man would have you thinking. And if Sonko had a low IQ he would not be governor. This guy is very smart and I don't mean book smart but street smart.

@ Mugikuyu, in no way did i intend to suggest that using insulting world is a measure of one's iq.When you are in sonkos position as governor, opponents will use such language to attack you,and also call you pumbavu.

I fully agree with those who applaud Sonko for weeding out the cartels, etc... lakini I have an issue with his delivery. C'mon guys, the language is at best primitive and crude. I found myself cringing at the sound of a grown assed man shouting at the top of his voice and down a phone line obscenities, kumbafu, etc..... a little like a little child kicking a tantrum and throwing their toys out of their pram. He could do better and I think he could refine his language. I also think we have a moral obligation to emulate behaviour reflective of the role accorded to us especially if in civil service. It's plain nasty and rude! Just saying.

Corruption does not know civility or order of doing things and so it deserves all the force, ambush and awe.
Sonko was quick thinking and rushed that guy before he started "brothering" him. That is a battle ground and you do not discuss or be gentle with the enemy. Exposure is one thing thieves hate the most, they prefer being arrested than exposed to the public. My folks have a saying that " it loathes the one who shouts its presence". Another saying is that when you go to collect from your debtors, do not take a seat i.e don't entertain them; otherwise they will sweet-talk you through a cup of tea and will never pay. Add the heat gov. Sonko and smoke them out.

O.K seeing here spport for Sonko and his ghetto approach, I guess maybe I am out of touch. Folks, maybe you are right.... language, manners have no place in this generation of politicians. After all, it is not that long ago that a certain someone called the president mtoto wa umbwa while Raila urged his followers to remove their knickers, withhold marital privileges…….aiii… the list is endless! I would like to see the reaction though of the same supporters when their kids come home and retaliate by hurling unmentionable abuse at their parents/siblings or peers. I don't belong.. and yes, I admit I am out of touch.

Why do we assume that every rich Kenyan is a thief? This is Sonko as usual playing to the gallery. There is a reason why leaders are required to have a certain level of education, hata kama ni ngumbaru. Hapana tukanana kama kumbafu na wewe ni kiongozi.

Imara Daima (not verified)     Fri, 12/28/2018 @ 11:10pm

Dada Sukari, baada ya kusikiliza lugha chafu ambayo Ndugu Sonko alitumia kwenye simu, nimeamua ya kwamba, Sonko hafai kuwa kiongozi hata kidogo.
