Gov't Suspends Demolition of Illegal Buildings Countrywide

The government has suspended the demolition of illegal buildings across the country effective immediately.

In a statement to the media, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua says the decision has been made following consultations with various State agencies and stakeholders.

“It is notified for the General Information of the Public that the Government has forthwith directed the immediate suspension of all demolition of properties in all parts of the Country until further notice,” says Kinyua.

Kinyua's directive comes hours after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stopped the demolition of several buildings in Nairobi's Nyama Villa estate, which began on Tuesday.

Speaking after meeting families whose houses have been demolished, Sonko says he arrived at the decision after talks with President Kenyatta, who is out of the country.

“I have today declared that no more buildings will be demolished until after the festive season is over. We cannot make families in Nairobi homeless during the festive season when everyone is expecting us to give them peace and a conducive environment for the holidays,” Sonko said.

“I don’t want to see the hired bulldozers on site until we resolve this matter. I know the courts approved the demolitions but on grounds of humanity, we cannot torture our fellow citizens especially during this festive season. This matter should be done in a humane way and in accordance with the law."

The government has in the past few months demolished several buildings in Nairobi including Java House and Shell Petrol Station in Kileleshwa, Ukay Mall, Airgate Centre, South End Mall and recently the multi-million-shilling Grand Manor Hotel in Gigiri.

That's a ridiculous reason. When demolition started, you all knew that it would go on throughout the holidays. This petty reprieve wont assuage the fears, and worries of the people affected. How can you enjoy the holidays knowing that soon you will face the dire situation. This is akin to being told that you are fired, but will let you "enjoy" the holidays, then come back and get the pink slip.
How about those whose houses have already been demolished? Do you think that they will now happily celebrate the holidays?
The question is"to demolish,or not to demolish. And this should have been settled at the "drawing board".
