Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and other county officials were left in shock when they made an impromptu visit to Pumwani Maternity Hospital on Monday morning.
Sonko made the visit to the famous medical facility after he received complaints from members of the public that the hospital was deliberately switching off life support machines leading to death of infants.
Records given by the hospital heads showed that only one infant had died but after searching, 12 bodies of dead infants were found in bags that had been stashed under a table. The bodies had been wrapped in polythene bags and hidden in three boxes inside a store instead of being transferred to a mortuary.
Upon interrogation, the officer in charge said that the bodies had stayed in the store from Friday, raising questions on why bodies of dead infants would be kept in a room for more than three days.
The Governor arrived at the hospital in a boda boda, catching the management off guard.
“Conducting impromptu visit at Pumwani Hospital, where it’s alleged by members of the public that the management shut down the machines at the Maternity Wing leading to loss of lives of young ones."
" I want to categorically state that human life must be respected no matter the case. Stern action will be taken against anyone found to be sabotaging the good services offered to our mothers and sisters who come to deliver in this facility,” Sonko wrote on social media during the raid.
“This is a police matter. You can’t lose 12 babies in a day,” Sonko said during the raid.

Where is the flying squad since our Judicial systems seems not to be working and Many Kenyans are doing things the way they want knowing they can bribe there way out. To solve this menace we need such individuals to be paraded in a line and a hail of bullets to rain on them. This is so inhuman and it looks like this nonsense has being an on going things. If the infants don't die some Miracle workers like Gilbert Ndeya are always on the other window ready to buy the a live kids.

If "the hospital was deliberately switching off life support machines leading to death of infants" it could be about some "Some parents couldn't Afford or Give in to giving "Kitu kidogo" to the so-called "nurses"; QUACK nurses. So sad. Anyway: Since I came to believe 99% of Kenyans are Evil at Best, I am NOT Surprised.

First of all we need more leaders like you Mr Sonko who not only listens to the powerless but who takes action. Let me just ask Why? Why would someone even think of doing this to an innocent new life? Only a woman knows the pain of giving birth, but losing that baby through this evil and thuggish way is just unbelievable. Mr Sonko, as a mother myself, I can only thank you for what you are doing especially for these killed babies who cannot speak for themselves nor their parents can not afford to pursue justice. I believe and I know that you will get to the bottom of this till these evil doers who don't know the pain of giving birth and losing the baby is like, to face the full arm of the law. We may not know the whole story behind this heinous crime for now but to hide dead babies in bags? Come on now!!

Nairobi county has a women representative who should be very well intune with plight of women and especially mothers, infant and children welfare. Where has she been in all this? She should be right there in the thick of it, supporting and working with Sonko to implement school milk program too. You only see this Passaris woman when ODM is demonstrating carrying twigs etc. Since that is no longer happening and the drama is over then she has gone back to doing what she does best which is nothing. If this is the work Sonko is going to do while operating from his Hill top Mauua house then let it be.

Having spent a few years at pumwani hospital this are the facts:
When a neonate/baby dies it is upon the family to collect the body and preserve in a mortuary of their choice. If they can't afford to preserve the body, the city mortuary will collect it after one- two days since they collect bodies from pumwani hospital three times per week. Apparently the city mortuary doesn't have the resources to collect bodies daily and pumwani doesn't have a mortuary.
There are no coffins at pumwani to store the bodies, so improvisation is done using carton boxes.
Rather than Kenyans expressing emotional hostilities blindly, they should interrogate sonko and other governors on the current state of health care.
If you go to pumwani right now you'll find pregnant mothers sharing beds and having to buy some consumables. their blood bank is almost empty yet they handle dire emergencies needing blood.
This is what Kenyans should be asking their government. our collective amnesia as a country is to blame.
Remember that the whole of nairobi city with 4M population has a total of 57 ICU beds which are always occupied.

@Tsetse, a hospital as big as Pumwani should have a mortuary. Not everybody whose does to hospital comes out alive. That is a fact. The previous & current administrators and management have been sleeping on their jobs.

Your comment makes sense, however switching off of machines not acceptable, secondly infants dying at that rate? Also not acceptable someone not doing good job, I work in labor and delivery and I know the circumstances which can lead to infant deaths, some of them delayed C sections in emergency situations, not monitoring the contractions, after water breaks, delivery should be imminent to avoid infections which results in death, and many others. It is very rare for health baby who has been carried for 9months live then dies during birth, that counts to human concerns.

I thought that is a huge number too but maybe the mothers giving birth at any given time is also high. It would help to know percentages. I hope Sonko will not just yell at workers but also do something humane with this situation.

@tsetse thank you for making it clear n telling as it is?The problem might not b this workers at all yet we blaming them harshly. If the dead is collect 2/3 days then we can have such piling up.But the switching off the incubators need to b investigated whether it’s true or not.Sonko need to buy fridges to store this bodies instead of waiting for days to b collected.Sorry to say 8 years ago We lost 25 weeks baby at a hospital in USA n the baby was kept 3/4 days for us either to collect burry it or we can let the hospital knows so they can dispose it for free.So I think this is stuff which happens in every country for keeping babies before they r either collected or disposed?Personally am more sickening about the machines bin switched off?Is it true or false.Thsts my take

This is crazy. More like a horror movie. The emotional turmoil the families are going through is only exacerbated by these revelations. I new things were bad at pumwani but this bad. Apart from just the ethical gross misconduct medically it puts all the other people in the hospital at risk; the other patients, newborns and even the staff at risk. As a person who grew up around the area I just feel sorry for the mothers and sisters who have to go to this hospital because they have no choice. The hardships and suffering they endure during there time there only to face this at the end is just sad. Surely something has to be done, this has to take priority.
