Kenyans Online Unimpressed by New Police Uniform Unveiled by President Kenyatta

Kenyan social media users have criticised the new police uniform for the General Duty officers unveiled by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday.

The General Duty Police was formed after the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police (AP) Units were merged. The new uniform consists of persian-blue shirt/blouse, trousers and beret.

“It’s important for everybody and especially the police officers to know that the Kenyan people are funding these changes so that the police can serve the people better,” President Uhuru Kenyatta said.

However, a section of Kenyans online were unimpressed by the uniform's color and design with some saying it looked “dull and old fashioned.”

@OliverMathenge tweeted: "The new Kenya Police uniform is actually very ugly. Ama ni mimi tu?"

@Lansbrown said: " Cannot allow a Kenya Police with such an ugly uniform to arrest me. A policeman dressed like a plumber."

Lawyer @DonaldBKipkorir noted: " The Uniforms for our newly unified Kenya Police is Ugly, Dull , Old fashioned & Uninspiring ... The Beret is worse ... They look like Salvation Army Band ... Police Uniform must be one that shows fitness & inspires fear ... Here, we were conned ."

@Asmali77 remarked: "The #PoliceReforms also increased the pocket sizes for the police uniform."

@MOmuttaha observed: " Compare and contrast the design and colour in New Police uniform and those for Rwandans . Ni wapi tulikosea??"

@KiprutoFestusKE noted: "Is increasing the size of the pocket a Reform Smh."

@errycar10 said:"Ladies and gentlemen, introducing China police - Kenya branch. Next week all Kenya Police officers will learn Chinese."

@TheParrotKE: "I am told the new Kenya Police uniforms are part of the Chinese Loans. Next President Uhuru Kenyatta will paint our officers yellow to complete the transformation of Kenya Zing Chu police!"

@leemakwiny said: "Police reforms can not be possible with that ugly uniform. Police reforms is not uniform. We must retain the old uniform. it's good."

As long as they do their job, and stop the graft menace, that's all is important in this new change. Otherwise, if they continue with the same behavior, this change in attire will just be a game of musical chairs.

I see no problem with the Ugly uniform.
Ugly uniforms just like the ugly corrupt character policemen and women wearing that uniform.

It’s perfect for them.

You can not put lipstick on a pig and call it a princess. Fact is police department is one of the most corrupt and you should be dealing with that not changing the uniform. And by the way what is it with Uhuru and blue. New passports are also blue???

They look like prisoners' uniforms- made of cheap material; I hope we didn't import this from abroad; I wouldn't be surprised though because we as a country have unhealthy appetite for anything from abroad.

abolish corruption in their ranks then we talk corruption, whoever is getting the tender for the new uniforms is probably the reason they changed them so that they can make all new ones, i hope it is not the case but most likely it is

Why such a bright, shouting neon- color blue? It's as if blue is trying to jump off them folks. I feel blue just looking at them.

PLO Alisema, "misitu ni ilele na nyani ni walewale". I hope this ain't it.
A new culture needs to come with the new look.

The new uniform should stand for no police officer will take bribe. period. If you caught taking bribe you are thrown to kamiti immediately

Apart from the baret, its hard to tell if one is acop. Generaly ,One should be able to spot acop amile away without the kofia. That looks like uniform fit for marine biologists,or oceaonography techs.
Having said that,I would hope that the uniform ushers in a new day free of corruption. Arent they tired of Transparency International naming them year after year that they are the most corrupt entity in the country? Why not work to reverse this image?Would it not be nice for TI to next year says that since donning the new uniform, the police force have "miraculously transformed into the least corrupt government department in Kenya. If that happens, then talks of some salary increase can start...

People and community friendly police force need to don such a uniform that is less intimidating. A police force need not be look "militarized" from the most basic of all-in manner of appearance.

Ghastly!! I was trying to be objective, but there is nothing authoritarian about the uniform. Just nasty. Someone here mentions the new passport being blue...and I can confirm it is! I took a double take at JKA when I saw someone with one. Stands out for all the wrong reasons! Nasty colours, will be a nightmare to be discreet or keep clean. Seems this government is filling it's time with distractions from the bigger issues needing to be fixed! For example, Matiangi (who I like) is starting to irk me with his pick, pick attitude to foreigners....starts to sound like Trump..blaming everything on immigrants. We live in a global world and people will grab opportunities as they come. As a migrant from Kenya thriving in another country, I take issues with his attitude towards others. This drip, drip attacks on immigrants is what breeds hatred. We have co-existed for years, so unless someone is blatantly abusing the system, I say - let go Matiangi! Just saying.

@ Sukari. I blame those mwakilishi servers that make you look bad submitting the same comments thrice. Mwakilishi must host it's site in a lousy environment. Maxiley seems to face the same problem now and then. Mwakilishi could do better. Tabloids like "the star" load up easily when you click on any link. Why wouldn't a useful diaspora news outlet with all the available technology not do the same. Sometimes I have to wait a minute for a page to load up; if it loads and not go into some error mode. Nkt.

I can imagine one cop stopping a youngster, "Kijana, kuja hapa, hauoni kirauni?" They look like a joke, not serious at all. Those jackets ! Easily noticeable though.
