Drama at City Hall as Nairobi MCAs Attempt to Forcefully Evict Impeached Speaker Beatrice Elachi from Her office

Drama ensued at City Hall on Monday after Members of County Assembly (MCAs) stormed Speaker Beatrice Elachi's office seeking to forcefully kick her out of the office.

This was after Ms Elachi reported to her officer on Monday morning despite having being impeached by an overwhelming majority on Thursday last week. 103 MCAs voted for her removal against two while the rest abstained.

A section of Nairobi MCAs forcefully entered Elachi's office by breaking the door and demanded she leaves immediately.

“Elachi Must go… Atoke” they were heard shouting as journalists covered the incident live on TV. "We will not leave until you vacate."

Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo maintained the office of the speaker is vacant and declared "there is no going back" on their decision to oust her.

“On Thursday last week, Members of County Assembly impeached Madam Speaker with six counts of allegations after the mover of the motion convinced the members. You cannot stay in a place where 98% of the people do not have confidence in you,” said majority leader Abdi Guyo.

“The President of the Republic of Kenya gave Madam Speaker an opportunity to serve Nairobians as the second speaker of the County Assembly of Nairobi. She was not sent here by the party to come and plunder the county resources as she did.”

Police were forced to lob tear gas canisters to disperse the outraged Ward Representatives when the situation got out of hand.

Elachi was impeached on grounds of abuse of office, gross misconduct, conflict of interest, undermining the authority of the County Assembly Board and failure to show leadership.

"Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction," an impeachment motion against her read.

She was also accused of inappropriately spending taxpayers cash on dubious trips to Dallas, Texas in the US. They said the Speaker lied that she traveled to the US for a Diaspora Women Network summit but instead went for plastic and knee surgery as evidenced by an insurance claim worth Sh1,000,000 from CIC insurance.

Elachi has since obtained court orders blocking her removal from office.
