Kenyan Man in Arizona Arrested for Being Drunk while Caring for Patients

A Kenyan man is in custody in Mesa, Arizona after police say he was drunk at work as he cared for the elderly at a senior care facility.

Court documents say George Mathenge, 30, was the only care provider working the night shift on Christmas. Patients and some family members noticed that Mathenge got drunk and passed out while working, and called police.

Police say they noticed that he smelled of alcohol and has slurred speech. He also admitted to drinking Vodka.  The manager of the facility also said that Mathenge missed giving medications to some patients that night.

Mathenge was arrested that night, and is in custody facing vulnerable adult abuse charges.

Wah!! Blacked out on the job? Now thats a new level. Majangilis have been drinking at nursing homes since they started giving out green cards like free lunches. I know of afew who have lost their licenses. Afew years ago, an ex-mjeshi got smacked by a combative resident and he gave the old guka a black eye. He did some time too- a week or something. He was wasted kiasi & blamed it on ptsd. He's lucky his face didn't get plastered all over kenyan webpages.

Selective amnesia. Who's the latest politician to grace our Youtube screens with his Christmastime overindulgence? NASA leaders and their minions have no moral authority to criticize one Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta love of the bottle. Gordon Opiyo always says, whatever Raila accuses you of, he is pointing the flashlight squarely at himself as he is more guilty of it.

The temptation might be to take the "holier than thou" attitude but truth be told, many of us are not this addicted yet. Go to most Kenyan parties and the drinking is out of this world. This chap is ill and needs help not condemnation.

sad.if you find yourself in such asituation...just call in sick
.anyway,if mathenge drove to work drunk, this is serious stuff.if he successfully survive the ordeal,he should be mr.pepsi cola.

It's quite dangerous and risky to have one employee working any shift in a healthcare facility! Why was he the only employee working Christmas day? @Mathenge,great job for a one night's self destructive behavior! I hope you are proud of your actions.

Opportunistic guy. He took advantage of the fact that there were no other colleagues that night to self indulge in alcohol. Or maybe he just feels depressed with the sort of career his doing and has turned to alcohol as a relief mechanism

You are onto something Mkenya. One guy in my stateside area was recently deported as a result of alcohol related fights in bars and Kenyan parties while being illegal here. Someone recently saw him in a matatu terminus in Kisumu working as a tout after being here 15 years plus.
On a positive note, many are doing great things. I am aware of a few who work here but wouldn't skip a bit in their lifestyles if shit hits the fan. They have investments that give them as much as $8000 a month in Kenya if they picked up and left country.

What kind of business are the doing making $8000 per month while they are in state side? Either you are exaggerating or they have bad business management because people will take advantage of you when you are not there to manage your business. Boss, I know at least 7 guys in my diaspora area that are making 400,000/month+ in property in Kenya.
-One friend has 80 flats, all bedsitters and one bedrooms. In addition, they have 20 small kiosks that are very tastefully done.
-Another friend has 40 right by the arboretum in Kileleshwa and he makes Sh 1 million+/month.
-Another friend makes about sh 450,000 a month with his 24 flats in Uthiru.
-Two have 50 flats+ each in the Kinoo area.
-One has 40 one bedroomed flats in Mathare North.
-Yet another friend has a petrol station in addition to income generating properties in very high end areas of Nairobi. Normal looking guy around here.
…and yes, I am one of the aforementioned people. I have excellent caretakers – one has been with me for 14 years. We are all friends with the aforementioned investors – share lots of information when it comes to approvals, funding, KRA taxes ie accounting, security, fundis etc. One trait with most of us is that we do it very quietly. Most of my friends around here have absolutely no clue what I do so frequently in Kenya. You cannot show every Tom, Dick and Harry your dream because naysayers are many.
Several don’t move to Kenya permanently for all sorts of reasons mainly to do with family. Some married to Americans while some spouses spouses, mostly women, are quite hesitant to move.

@Nani?, I have been thinking about doing something in the same line of business but my issue is with unscrupulous fundis in 254. Can you share how you get/vet fundis who know their stuff in kenya. Also if you can share approximately how much is required to build a 40 flats without taking any loans in kenya. The thing that is holding me at the moment is lack of information and corruption dealing with county officials in Kenya

Building in Kenya is baptism by fire. I will be lying by telling you that I have not been swindled. I can narrate a story where a plumber put the pipes all wrong in a five storey building and I ended up paying an additional 400,000 to correct the mistake. In another case, I paid a contractor 700,000 and he did not pay the workers for two weeks and had to fire him together with the workers. Getting a permit, any permit, requires bribery - I had sworn that I would NEVER bribe anyone. Guess what, I have had no choice but to do it. That said, the returns on real estate investment in Kenya has exceeded my expectations....location location location. In addition, I have become very professional and customer service oriented - clearly laid out rules, returning deposits in two weeks max and being on top of repairs. Word has gotten around and I never have vacancies. Some tenants have been with me for 10 years+. Building prices vary depending on location and what you really want. The best thing is to engage an architect and QS to draw a building and work on some BQs. Also, I do have a fundi as well. That said, I would recommend that you have an additional person on the ground to keep up on the details. Their job is to minimize theft. Period. Whatever the recommendation I give you does not negate your due diligence. Let me know whether you have additional questions

Kenyans are thieves!! Let me repeat again for those who did not hear me well. "All Kenyans are potential thieves, its only the degree of thievery that varies.Kenyans see and lookopportunities wherever they hear of a majuu person.Dont even trust own biological father or brother. Watakuangamiza. If you are to build your own flat, I suggest you do it yourself, and pole pole. That is, it is posdible, unakuja una chapachapa foundation and or the walls then unarudi. Almost 3 hears after i relocated to Kenya, I keep on running from my fellow Kenyans especially when i want to do something. Kenyans have surpassed Nigerians with expertise in defrauding, conmanship, thievery, money-laundering, and all manner of criminality. Kenyans will still from you and then use the same money to bribe the police to not be arrested. Diasporans be careful with your loot, utafagiliwa zooote. Kenyans are fighting to elevate their lifestyles by stealing or defrauding their fellow Kenyans. What you see with Mpigs, Mcas, governors is a true depiction of who Kenyans are. They will con you and then watch them spending your money like its not a big deal. Its difficult to get somebody you can real trust, but its worth a try.

Dr Sifuna, I second you. kuteleza sio kuanguka! He has messed up, yes, lakini judging him negatively will not undo what has been done. Atumie resources at hand to rectify the situation. Jungu's/mawest are very crafty and always panga a rota to suit their situations, plus they know how quick we are to latch on to an extra shift (coz' we need the coins, damn it!), so Christmas is always a shift you will not see them working if they have a choice and that might explain why Mathenge was working solo. Yes, the brother erred, but let's not kick him when down. His conscience and humiliation is punishment enough!

Sukari (not verified)     Fri, 12/29/2017 @ 11:22am

@Pita, what's your point. If anyone knows him is irrelevant. You want him shamed more that he has. Personally, I am just happy none of the people he was caring came to harm as that would have been a tragic mess. You put yourself (although you may think you are hollier) in his shoes and imagine the shame he may be feeling. I don't know the man, but judging him on a human level injected by a bit I know of our people (me included). Give him a hand up from the floor, not stomp him harder when down. Undugu, that's all - that's where Nigerians fair better than us.

Do not be stressed out bro. Everyone else went to be with their families for the occasion, including those who came to visit their loved ones there. You volunteered to be away from family and be at least there for the seniors. The Judge will probably give you a conditional dismissal, community service or rehab options. If you are out on bond please go straight to AA. Your odds will be upped.

Swali @Mkenya Halisi,

Why are you so giddy and ready with your pompous advice on how Diaspora Kenyans should live? Looks like you live in Kenya; don't you think there are enough Kenyan problems in Kenya among Kenyans to deal with? Like the idiotic prayers held at the 'black spots' of road carnage, maybe? See, I think you should advice your fellow Kenyans on the ground to think of reworking those roads or double carriage ways, instead of prayer. Shouldn't you focus your energy there and leave us with our illegal problems? I mean, why are you taking Panadols for our headaches. Some of you Kenyans are a sad lot, negative nancies, debbie downers and just plain evil creatures. Why do you condemn your fellow country man so? Think white people are better? I am convinced that the real poverty of the African is his/her inability to wish his/her own well. What we should be doing is looking for ways to help a brother out. He did not kill anyone. The charges against him are exaggerated to make him an example (a racist tinge may play a role). The right response is to treat his alcohol problem. Stop reinforcing the stereotypes held by white people against blacks.

Sukari (not verified)     Fri, 12/29/2017 @ 07:19pm

The crabs-in-a-barrel mentality gets my goat too. Thanks for the broad perspective and even broader advice. I go out of the country only for leisure, but I don't begrudge those who leave the Momaland for greener pastures pursuit their industry and ambitions. If we could only look at an individual's mistake/s or success without judging them by last name but oh!pipe dream, hovering just out of reach. Oh, loyal friend, pipe dream! Thanks doc and also those others who've chosen to anchor their ships in harbors non-tribal for your enlightened views. Kenyans in the diaspora :Please, brothers and sisters, the system and legal mechanisms there work like clockwork. Abide. Work, rest and play. Lawfully. Invest.
My people in Kenya, if you can dance ayard,do it with gusto. If your countrymen choose to dance abroad, let them be. Respect their fearlessness, ambition.Their enterprise. It's tough enough for them (as per my friends aforeign) to be all those miles away from home. Culture shock, discrimination, racism, rejection etc,are enough monsters for them to contend with. Let's not sting them.Roll on, blessed chariots.
