Inside the Kenyatta Family’s Luxury Hotels Charging Up to Sh50,000 a Night

The Kenyatta family operates a substantial portfolio of luxury hotels across Kenya through the Heritage Group of Hotels, with properties spanning key tourist regions including the Maasai Mara, the Rift Valley, the Kenyan coast, and northern Kenya

The Heritage Group is overseen by Muhoho Kenyatta, brother to former president Uhuru Kenyatta. He assumed operational leadership after the departure of former managing director Mohamed Hersi in 2017.

The group’s properties serve both local and international visitors, offering high-end accommodation and tailored experiences in some of Kenya’s most prominent travel destinations. One of the flagship properties is the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, known for its scenic views and golf resort.

Previously used for political retreats during Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency, the lodge offers rooms priced between Sh30,000 and Sh53,000 per night. In the Maasai Mara, the Mara Explorer camp is located along the Talek River and is popular during the annual wildebeest migration.

Nightly rates reach up to Sh104,000. Nearby, Mara Intrepids provides another luxury safari option, charging around Sh90,000 per night for a double tent with prime access to wildlife viewing areas. In northern Kenya, Samburu Intrepids sits on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Its upgraded tents, often visited by elephants and other wildlife, are priced at approximately Sh75,000 per night.

Along the coast, Kipungani Explorer on Lamu Island is currently closed for renovations. Known for its beachfront bandas and peaceful setting, the property may be undergoing repositioning to better meet market demands. Voyager Beach Resort in Mombasa’s Nyali area is the group’s most accessible offering.

With 236 rooms and a starting rate of Sh21,000, it targets a wider range of guests, from families to adventure travellers. Also part of the portfolio is Voyager Ziwani in Tsavo West, which provides a quieter safari experience. Its nightly rates average around Sh28,000, attracting guests seeking a more relaxed and nature-focused stay.
