The Hidden Trust Between Kenyan Men and the Aftershave Ladies

In Nairobi’s barbershops, aftershave massage by specialist women has become a vital part of men’s grooming, fostering strong trust and loyalty beyond basic hair care.

In many Nairobi barbershops, specialist women known locally as “shampoo girls” provide aftershave massages that go beyond washing and conditioning hair. Their service includes applying soothing aftershave products and performing relaxing massages on the scalp, neck, shoulders, and face. These sessions, often lasting up to an hour, offer clients a rare moment of personal care and relaxation amid their busy lives.

Preston Martin, a 38-year-old banker and regular at Glits & Glam barbershop, initially resisted the aftershave massage due to his baldness and sensitive scalp. After deciding to try it, he appreciated the professional and respectful approach of the specialist.

“She kept checking if the pressure was okay, was very respectful. That made me relax,” he says. Since then, Preston insists on the same specialist and will skip the massage if she is unavailable.

Barbers recognise that skilled aftercare specialists play an important role in client satisfaction and retention. Gerry Tamaro, a barber in Kilimani, notes that the relationship clients build with these specialists can be stronger than the one with their barbers. Many barbershops now train their aftercare staff rigorously to ensure professionalism and maintain hygiene standards that reinforce client trust.

Massage therapist Grace Nduta from Azure Spa & Wellness explains that barbershop aftershave massages differ from conventional spa treatments, which focus on the whole body and therapeutic outcomes. In contrast, barbershop massages prioritise comfort and relaxation within a familiar social setting. This environment contributes significantly to the loyalty seen among clients.

Counselling psychologist Cleopa Njiru highlights the emotional importance of the ritual, describing it as a rare opportunity for men to feel respected, understood, and safe.

“When a man insists on being served by a particular lady, it is about trust and rapport that has developed over time,” Njiru says.

He emphasises that this relationship is professional, with clear boundaries maintained to prevent misunderstandings or inappropriate behaviour.

Njiru cautions that the intimacy involved requires care from both clients and specialists to avoid complications, especially when personal issues like grief or loneliness are present.
