Gay Kenyan Author Binyavanga Wainaina Announces He is Engaged, Plans to Marry His Nigerian Lover Next Year
Gay Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina has announced that he is engaged to his long-term partner, a Nigerian man, and that they are set to wed early next year.
He added that the wedding will take place in South Africa, where the couple plans on living.
“I asked my love for his hand in marriage two weeks ago. He said yes, nearly immediately. He is Nigerian. We will be living in South Africa, where he will be studying next year. We will get married there, early next year,” Binyavanga wrote on social media.
Binyavanga added that they will hold a reception in Nairobi sometime after the wedding.
“We will have a reception for Kenyans in Nairobi sometime next year too. Nothing has surprised me more than coming to love this person, who is gentle and has the most gorgeous heart. I consider myself hugely lucky that he loves me and I have only recently fallen in love with him, but we have known each other and have been dating on and off since 2012,” he wrote on social media on Wednesday.
Binyaganga announced that he is gay on his 43rd birthday in January, 2014 in an article titled “I am a homosexual, mum.”

I have no problem coexisting with LGBT folks. My only problem is; why do I need to know their stories even when they are of such mundane and routine issues? If people can go about their biz quietly without involving every one else - and that too applies to the political and pious class - I could care less. I don’t consider myself a moral yardstick for anyone, so I won’t pass any judgement. As Mugikuyu says, let those who rate themselves high morally, sharpen their knives.

They do, but to their network - the ones likely to be closely involved in the wedding; most of the time anyways. It is when it takes the media dimension and that everyone should know, where I take offense. The ferocious reaction of the two, MkH and G1, goes to show how narrow minded we can be. They and many of us only perceive gays and gayism simply as a sexual act; between people of the same sex. We only see the penetration aspect, the eros. As much as the act exists, there is clearly more - such people do give each other comfort and companionship. Now you mask, why would they not seek such companionship from their opposite sex, as God created them (In his own image).
