ODM Pledges Support to Families of Mourners Who Died at Raila Odinga’s Public Viewing

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has pledged support to the families of mourners who died during the public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.
In a statement released on Wednesday, ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed that his office is in contact with several bereaved families to offer condolences and assistance. He described the incidents as "needless and unfortunate", citing both crowd mismanagement and the use of force as contributing factors.
The deaths occurred on 16 October, when large crowds gathered at Kasarani Stadium after the state viewing was moved from Parliament Buildings due to overwhelming public interest. According to police reports, chaos erupted at Gate 5 as mourners surged forward, prompting officers to fire teargas and live rounds.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic and confusion. Autopsy results released on 21 October confirmed that at least three individuals died from gunshot wounds.
The following day, a separate incident occurred at Nyayo Stadium during the state funeral, where a stampede broke out as people queued to view the body.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) confirmed two deaths and reported that over 160 people received medical treatment on site, with 34 referred to hospitals. The stampede was reportedly triggered by a sudden redirection of queues near Gate 5, leading to congestion and panic.
Sifuna called for accountability from the relevant authorities and urged a compassionate and transparent response. He said that efforts are ongoing to identify and support all affected families.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also offered his condolences and committed to assisting with funeral arrangements.
