Faith Odhiambo: I Serve the People, Not Political Interests

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has denied participating in the activities of a government-appointed panel on protest victims, citing a court order that suspended its operations.

In a public statement, Odhiambo said she has not attended any meetings or taken part in the work of the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Riots, despite being named vice chair. The panel was established under President William Ruto’s administration to address claims of harm suffered during recent protests.

Odhiambo said her decision to abstain from the panel’s work is based on an existing High Court injunction, which halted the panel’s proceedings pending a constitutional petition. She reiterated her commitment to the rule of law, saying, “I respect the rule of law and abide by the orders given by the High Court.”

She also clarified that her loyalty lies with the public and the legal profession, not with any political side. Her statement, titled “Duty and Loyalty: A Call to Serve”, addressed criticism that her appointment signalled alignment with the government.

The LSK president highlighted broader concerns about the independence of legal institutions and called for a review of criminal charges brought against protestors under anti-terrorism laws. She described these charges as “trumped-up” and urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to re-examine them.

She also called for accountability in cases of police misconduct during demonstrations. Under Odhiambo’s leadership, the LSK continues to offer pro bono legal support to victims of police brutality.

She stressed the importance of listening to those affected and involving them in the legal process, saying this approach ensures justice is informed by real experience rather than political interests. However, her appointment has faced strong opposition from some members of the legal profession.

Advocate Levi Munyeri has filed a petition demanding her resignation, arguing that her involvement with the panel compromises the independence of the LSK. Former LSK President Nelson Havi has also supported calls for her to step down and has endorsed lawyer Charles Kanjama as a potential replacement.
