Ledama Ole Kina Defends Plan to Eliminate Governor Term Limits

A proposal by Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina to eliminate term limits for county governors in Kenya has ignited a nationwide debate, raising questions about governance, accountability, and the potential for corruption.
Ole Kina's suggestion, shared on social media on Monday, 4 August, argues that the current two-term limit encourages prioritising personal enrichment over public service. He contends that governors spend their first term securing political alliances and their second misappropriating resources.
The senator's viewpoint has been met with widespread criticism, reflecting deep-seated scepticism about the ability of politicians to deliver meaningful change. Detractors cite the lack of term limits for Members of Parliament as evidence that tenure alone does not guarantee improved governance. Others highlight specific governors they believe do not merit extended terms, underscoring broader public distrust in political leadership.
Previously, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei proposed extending gubernatorial terms to ten years, demonstrating the issue's persistence in political discussions.
