KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion Steps Down

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has stepped down. Sossion, who has been at the helm of the union for the past eight years, announced his resignation during a media briefing at Windsor Golf Hotel in Nairobi on Friday.
His resignation from the influential position comes a day before KNUT’s elections slated for Saturday at Ruaraka grounds in Nairobi.
“In the interest of KNUT continuity and its membership, I hereby on June 25th, 2021 bow out of KNUT leadership honorably. I shall remain loyal to KNUT and will always be available to advise and support the leadership of the union,” said Sossion.
Sossion, who is also a nominated Member of Parliament, called on the government not to muzzle the tutors’ union by failing to remit statutory contributions from members.
“I trust that the government of Kenya, as I exit, because that there has been this argument that as long as Sossion stays the government will not release union dues. I’m making this passionate appeal that the government will find it necessary to allow union dues flow to KNUT so that the leadership and workers earn a salary,” he said.
Sossion further stated that he is proud of his achievements at the helm of KNUT, saying that the education sector improved greatly with public schools performing better during his tenure.
He was elected as the sixth secretary-general of KNUT in 2013 following the demise of David Okuta.
“I have outgrown KNUT. My responsibility now shifts to Parliament,” he added.

Mixing politics and unions. Only Atwoli can do that successfully. Accepting nomination as MP compromised ability to fight for teachers. Uhuru destroyed Jubilee, NASA, KNUT. Moi a former teacher had a soft spot for unions
