Mt Kenya University Swings into Action After Student Confessed He Killed Four Family Members, Including a US-Based Man

Mt. Kenya University (MKU) has taken action after one of its students confessed to killing five people including four members of his family.

22-year-old Lawrence Simon Warunge, an IT student at the institution, admitted he murdered his father Nicholas Njoroge (a US-based nurse), mother Ann Wanjiku, his brother Christian Njenga, cousin Maxwell Njenga, and the family’s farmhand James Kinyanjui.

The five were murdered on the night of January 5th in Karura village, Kiambaa, Kiambu County.

Following his arrest, Lawrence led police to Mai Mahiu where he had disposed of the murder weapons and the clothes he wore during the massacre.

A Kiambu court allowed police to detain him together with his girlfriend, Sarah Muthoni for 14 days pending the completion of investigations.

During interrogation, Lawrence said he researched on the internet the best way to eliminate his victims, adding that he was motivated by Villanelle, a psychopathic killer in the British show “Killing Eve”.

MKU in a statement announced the launch of a fully-fledged program to support learners and the youth in tackling mental health issues.

The program will be led by the university’s co-founder and board member Dr. Jane Nyutu, who recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology.

“She has endeavored to use her expertise and skills in solving the learners’ psychological problems, arrest indiscipline in learning institutions and help the youth cope with the effects of Covid-19 pandemic,” read the statement.

Commenting on the new program, MKU Chairman Prof Simon Gicharu, said: “It is clear that our young people are not okay, actually have not been in a long time and we can’t continue to sit down and watch anymore.”
