MCA Tables Motion for Impeachment of Nairobi Governor Sonko

A Nairobi County MCA has tabled an impeachment motion against embattled Governor Mike Sonko. The ouster motion was tabled in the county assembly on Thursday by Makongeni Ward Representative Peter Imwatok, who doubles up as the minority leader.
The tabling of the motion was briefly disrupted by a section of rowdy MCAs opposed to it, forcing Speaker Beatrice Elachi to intervene and order their ejection from the chamber.
Imwatok wants Governor Sonko removed from office on the grounds of abuse of office, violation of the Constitution, irregular procurement, among others.
He claims that Governor Sonko oversaw the irregular withdrawal of Sh200 million in cash from county coffers and also used public resources to settle political scores.
“Sonko every time consumes alcohol in the office of the governor, thus making insults to employees and members of this House,” said Imwatok.
“He fires staff on WhatsApp and Facebook without allowing them due process thus affecting service delivery.”
Further to this, Imwatok accuses Sonko of violating the constitution by declining to nominate a deputy governor after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January 2018. He further alleges that Sonko irregularly paid millions of shillings to single road contractors in several Nairobi estates.
Imwatok also says the Sh1.5 billion AAR Insurance cover for Nairobi County employees and the Sh18 million Sonko spent on the Nairobi beautification project were irregular.
Imwatok told a local TV station that 67 MCAs had appended their signatures on the impeachment motion. To pass, the motion must receive the backing of two-thirds of the assembly.
Sonko, who is facing corruption charges, was barred from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined.

Those MCAs opposing the impeachment of Sonko are partakers in corruption! No one should defend a thief (a stealing Governor) unless he/she is a thief!

Sonko has been indicted of very serious crimes. The idea that he is still playing governor is a major insults to all good people in Nairobi. He should be under house arrest. He should have been locked out of the office right away. There is a very disturbing pattern whereby indicted public official get out in bail and are allowed to go back to their offices as if nothing happened. Very disturbing. When are these cases going to be heard????? When the witnesses are no longer alive???????????
