Kenyans Online Irked as CS Ukur Yatani’s Wife Lands Two Gov’t Appointments

The government has released the names of latest appointees to various State positions through a gazette notice dated Friday, November 15th.

But it is the name of acting Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani's wife, Gumato Yatani that raised eyebrows among Kenyan social media users. Mrs. Yatani’s name appeared twice in the gazette notice.

The notice shows that she was appointed by Education CS Prof. George Magoha as the Chairperson of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Council, for a period of three years, beginning November 8th, 2019.

Mrs. Yatani was also named as a member of the Taskforce on Standards and Quality Infrastructure Reforms in the country. She was appointed to this position by Trade CS Peter Munya through a Gazette Notice number 10758.

Kenyans online criticized the move, wondering why one person should hold more than one State job while employment remains a national problem.

@jamessmat reacted: “CS wife appointed to TWO jobs, how competent and nice.”

@Rnagila said: “One would think, Kenya's population is only 10,000.”

@okumu_ephantus noted: “CS Yatani’s wife assigned two government roles while 99.99% of youths are still jobless and hopeless in Kenya. Hii Kenya tulikosea wapi?”

@georgeokoth24 tweeted: “Gumato Yatani the wife of the acting Treasury CS @BaloziYatani has appeared twice in government Gazette notice. First appointment done by unmatched CS @ProfMagoha and the other by Peter Munya. Very few Kenyans were qualified for those positions.”
