MPs Approve Hilary Mutyambai’s Nomination as New Inspector-General of Police

Members of Parliament on Wednesday approved President Kenyatta's nominee for the position of Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai.

The MPs confirmed Mutyambai's nomination after the committee that vetted him last week tabled a report recommending his appointment.

In its report, the committee said it found that the nominee is suitable for the job.

Mutyambai has been serving as the Deputy Director Counter-terrorism at the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

He will take over from Joseph Boinnet, who left office last month after his four-year non-renewable term expired.

“Having considered the suitability, capacity, and integrity of the nominee, the committee recommends that Parliament approves the nomination and subsequent appointment,” said National Security Committee chairman Paul Koinange.

Mutyambai is an experienced officer having joined the Kenya Police Service in 1998 as a corporal and rising through the ranks at the NIS.

MPs want Mutyambai to end cases extra-judicial killings as his first assignment.

“There is serious disappearance of Kenyans. There are bodies of Kenyans decomposing at city mortuary. This should be Mutyambai’s first assignment,” says Majority Leader Aden Duale.

Ndugu Mutyambai:

Askari walimwendea rais awaongezee mshahara. Naye bila kusita (hesitate) aliwaambia wavune mahali wanapofanya kazi!

You look like the proverbial "new sheriff in town". Please live up to the dictates of your career and avoid being anything close to your predecessor. He is credited with some reforms but I am afraid that most were dress rehearsals to camouflage shortcomings. So new IG you are on this way once and all the good you can do for the country, its people and the force do it now. For there was no better time to have a change on board than now.
