Police Gun Down Seven Suspected Criminals after Botched Robbery Incident in Nairobi

Police in Nairobi on Monday gunned down seven suspected criminals in a botched robbery incident at a warehouse located in Industrial Area.

Nairobi Deputy Commandant Richard Kerich says the suspects were trying to steal gas cylinders from the godown when an alarm was raised alerting police officers.

Kerich says five other suspects were arrested during the Sunday night incident.

The robbers are said to have held hostage two security guards who were on duty before loading the gas cylinders onto a small lorry.

“Police were alerted and managed to kill the seven on the spot as they tried to flee. We recovered crude weapons from the men,” says Kerich.

Among weapons found with the suspects are a toy pistol, an axe, machetes and claw bars.

Their bodies have been moved to the City Mortuary.

I understand the problem created by dealing with robbers, but I think Kenyan Police need to do more training on how to handle robberies. This habit of kill first then check is leading to unnecessary slaughter of petty thieves. Unless they were trying to fight the police with the machete and claw bars, why gun down seven people who are fleeing the scene and not shooting at the police? People armed only with toy guns and claw bars! You mean to tell me that killing is the only training the police get? They need to be trained on other methods of apprehending thugs besides just shooting to kill.
