Kenyans Online React as Mike Sonko Nominates Miguna Miguna as Nairobi Deputy Governor

Kenyans took to the social media to react to news that Governor Mike Sonko had nominated lawyer Miguna Miguna as Nairobi Deputy Governor.

In a letter to Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly Beatrice Elachi on Wednesday, Sonko said he had picked the self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general for the position, saying he is the right man for the job.

“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.

“The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”

The surprise move by Governor Sonko attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans online, and while some were confused, other hailed the decision as wise. Here are some of the reactions;

@ItsMutai tweeted: "Mike Sonko has effectively shown Jubilee cartels a middle finger and basically told them to go drying by nominating Miguna Miguna as his Deputy for Nairobi. (sources are that the cartels in Jubilee had their person whom Sonko rejected after they failed to stop Kibicho & company)."

@BKhaniri noted: "Did sonko think this through, Miguna Miguna is the kind of a person who can fire his boss."

Blogger @RobertAlai said:"If you don't want Miguna Miguna as the deputy of Sonko, don't waste your breath commenting on the appointment. He will destroy the whole thing with a stupid comment. He will just act childishly."

Lawyer @DonaldBKipkorir noted:"In appointing Miguna Miguna as his Deputy, Gov. Mike Sonko is trodding on History . Abraham Lincoln, America’s greatest President appointed his bitterest rivals to his Cabinet .. Prof. Doris Kearns Goodwin captured it in her book Team Of Rivals .. Sonko - Miguna may save Nairobi."

Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi noted:" Imagine living in Nairobi with a population of 5 million Kenyans and you have Sonko as Governor and Miguna as Deputy Governor...some jokes are not just in bad taste but are cruel too."

@Disembe said:" Miguna and Sonko may be ideologically worlds apart, but at least the two share a disdain for cartels; and Sonko has demonstrably moved to dismantle City Hall cartels. If Miguna remains in his moral high ground he risks only finding Jesus, Elija and the 24 elders."
