Kenya and Nebraska Sign Diaspora-Focused Pact to Enhance Trade and Education

Kenya and the US state of Nebraska have signed a formal agreement to expand cooperation in education, labour mobility, investment, and cultural exchange.

Signed on 12 September 2025 at State House Nairobi, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was endorsed by Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline K. Njogu, and Nebraska Secretary of State, Robert B. Evnen, in the presence of President William Ruto. The agreement sets up a long-term framework for collaboration between Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs and Nebraska’s Office of the Secretary of State.

The partnership aims to connect Kenya’s growing base of skilled professionals with labour and training opportunities in Nebraska. Under the MoU, Kenyan nationals will have access to employment, apprenticeship, and skills transfer programmes in Nebraska through structured temporary migration.

Nebraska, in turn, will benefit from a consistent stream of trained workers, stronger trade ties, and broader cultural exchange. Education is a key focus of the agreement, with both parties committing to support work-based learning through apprenticeship programmes led by industry.

The deal also includes plans for joint research, faculty exchanges, and partnerships between academic institutions, with the goal of equipping Kenyan students with global skills and experience. The MoU also covers cooperation in diaspora engagement, youth programmes, tourism, and governance.

Both sides have agreed to encourage bilateral investment and business development between Kenyan and Nebraskan partners. For Kenya, the agreement is part of a broader strategy to expand international opportunities for its youth and skilled workforce.
