Kenyan MSS Officer and Civilian Die in Haiti Armoured Vehicle Crash, 8 Injured

A road accident involving two armoured vehicles has killed a Kenyan peacekeeper and a Haitian civilian on the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville route in Haiti.
The crash occurred on Sunday evening during a recovery operation when one MaxxPro armoured vehicle towing another experienced mechanical failure, causing it to lose control and collide. Eight members of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission were injured, with three in critical condition. The casualties were taken to Lambert Santé Hospital in Pétion-Ville. The Kenyan officer and the civilian were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Those critically injured are scheduled for medical evacuation to the Dominican Republic, while others remain at Aspen Level 2 Hospital for treatment. MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka did not confirm the nationality of the deceased officer but offered condolences and assured support to the families and injured personnel. Haitian media have identified the fallen officer as Kenyan.
The Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road is known for its difficult terrain and frequent gang-related violence, making it a dangerous route for both civilians and security forces. The MSS mission has suffered multiple casualties in recent weeks, including two officers killed in separate attacks and another Kenyan officer reported missing and presumed dead.
Additionally, two Haitian SWAT officers were recently killed in a drone strike involving explosives, signalling the use of new tactics by criminal groups.
The United Nations human rights office reports that from October 2024 to June 2025, over 1,000 people have been killed, more than 200 injured, and at least 620 kidnapped in the Artibonite and Central departments.
