Four Kenyan MPs Blocked from Attending Diaspora Event in Minneapolis

The 2024 Diaspora Trade and Investment Summit in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has encountered significant challenges as several key speakers are reportedly prevented from attending by the Kenyan government.

The event, organized by the Association of Kenyan Diaspora Organizations, Inc., aims to foster connections between entrepreneurs, investors, government officials, and industry experts to explore trade and investment opportunities within the diaspora community. According to a message sent to the organizing committee's chairman, four members of parliament—Richard Momoima Onyonka, Okiya Omutatah, Carren Nyamu, and Dr. Manduku are unable to travel to the United States. Various reasons have been cited, including withheld passports and lack of executive clearance. The sole guest who has managed to travel is Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee who is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

Recent events have added complexity to the situation, as Senators Onyonka and Okiya have been vocal about alleged scandals involving high-ranking officials in President William Ruto's administration.
