Jeff Koinange and Jalang'o Speak On the 'Annoying' Behaviors of Kenyans in the US [VIDEO]

Celebrated media personality Jeff Koinange and his co-host comedian Jalang'o took time to discuss a range of issues about Kenyans in the diaspora, particularly those in the United States.

Speaking during their breakfast show Jeff and Jalas at Royal Media Service's Hot96 FM, the two talked about the behavior of Kenyans who moved to the US.

First, Jalang'o asks Jeff if you would ever want to return to the US, where he worked for McDonald's about 30 years ago, to which Jeff replies he would never want to return there; even if he was offered a good job or one million dollars a year. Jeff says living in Africa and Kenya in particular is way better than in the US,.

Jalang'o goes further to take a dig at Kenyans in the US over their behaviors when they come to Kenya for holiday.

" That's why I hate my friends.... when they come here they think like the way they are on holiday, you are on holiday too. They want you to  spend all the time with them without recognizing you are working........ " He says adding that they later complain that one doesn't time for them.

The two also highlight the difficulties Kenyans in abroad go through. They cite cases where one works hard to earn cash in the diaspora, but ends up being defrauded by relatives who misuse the cash sent to them to undertake projects on their behalf.

So Jeff, what is the “annoying” behavior does Kenyans in the US have according to your video, when they visit home? Finding that they have been conned by their relatives? Is that the annoying behavior according to you? And you think that is funny?

I think this is the Annoying behavior: 1. Wakenya Ma-USians Coming to Kenya (for Holidays/Leave/Vacation thinking their Kenyan Counterparts, Relatives Friends, or Former Classmates have All the Time to Spend with them. And (them US Kenyans) begin to complain about it (failing to Understand that Kenyans are NOT on Holiday/Leave/Vacation ; them Kenyans have to Go to Work). 2. Going back to Majuu yao US (in a Huff) just because they are Surprised/Ashamed of How their Kenyan Counterparts, Relatives, Friends or Former Classmates have ADVANCED than them (ma-USians). 3. So they Go back to the US probably for Good (NEVER to come back again). And this is True.

Mwakilishi has told a half baked story and they ought to do better than this. You also have to listen to the video to know what they are talking about. Jalas is the one talking about the annoying behavior NOT Jeff. Jalas being a comedian as usual has to do his stuff.

Rumbwa (not verified)     Thu, 06/14/2018 @ 06:51pm

Is it true that Jeff is muuaji Raila, majambazi Orengo and Miguna's inlaws having sold them separate pieces of his inherited land grabbed by his expired Grandfather,Koinange wa Mbiyu?Jeff should know that not all people got inheritance and worse still-corruptly grabbed wealth from poor people of Kiambaa Division.

I would have no Real SYMPATHY for 99% of Kenyans in the US. And this is Mainly because 99% are Miserable FAILURES because of their Envy, Jelousy, Coveting, Hatred, TRIBALISM and Foolish Competition one against the other. E.g.: 1. You hook Up a your fellow Kenyan (for a Job) at your Place of Work). Before you know it" the IDIOT is "Chimbaring" you to American Workmates or Bosd (for Favors or to get your Hours or Madoubles). 2. A Kenyan like ALBERT gets a Green Card, he goes to Houston, TX. Gilbert accommodates him for Free; and then he ZEROES in on Gilbert's wife to Destroy his Marriage among other Heartlessness to the Host). Hour Crude and Rude is this? Now you see how Miserable Kenyans in the US do NOT deserve SYMPATHY. And if they deserve it:They deserve ZERO Sympathy.

I feel your pain. If you want to succeed, approach them this way:

- People who will provide chapatis and useless stories once in a while. Go in, cheer up, act a idiotic too...return to your life of upwardness.
- Join American orgs - Chamber of commerce, Director of NGO boards (many volunteer boards). Truth is that Kenyans will mess you up in the pig-sties they live in.

Sometimes ni kweli cant remember last time I had a conversation na neighbour..kutoka hivi gari nanguruma chui chui..umeishia..kurudi park gari angalia mailbox chui chui..home kula..but now with technology..google maps what's up video skype atleast you can authenticate yr small investment contrary to kitambo where means of communication ilikuwa barua ama simu..Kazi +254 ni kujuana ..50% by 50% kuna advantages na disadvantages one strikes a balance.

Sokwe (not verified)     Thu, 06/14/2018 @ 07:54pm

After watching and listening to the video carefully, I can say there is a lot of truth in the conversation. Work in the US even though you can make good money is equivalent to legalized slavery. No time to rest or relax. Work, work and more work and you would not even know your next door neighbor. Arrest my case but Kenya is easier.

Mhalisi man I keep saying , you never met the real professionals here who never hustled , your comments about slavery is so generalized. I do not slave, actually I know many Kenyans with lots of free time and still making 6 figures and not working that hard. It seems you never met those , too bad, your memories of USA are so harsh. Choices , choices. "Me I" I have said before I come home and after a month I do not know what to do there and miss the USA you do not like and YES WE ARE MANY !!!!!

The Quickest way to Differ (on a High) with SOME Kenyans in the US; Sucsessful or Failful; Educated or UnEducated) is: Tekling tgem About Coming back to or Investing in Kenya. They will Cuss you Out or they will look at You as if They're in Heaven and You're in Hell. Nb: Then when they Die in that Heaven of theirs, you See or Hear their "Loved ones" begging for Money to "Fly their Bodies back to their Houseless homes in Kenya.

formerlyguest2 (not verified)     Thu, 06/14/2018 @ 11:18pm

The issues I have with this kind of generalization is ; there are many Kenyans who are not working odd jobs in every state in the USA especially in the East coast, DMV alone ( Mla Chake feel free to make fun of DMV)I know doctors, Pharmacists, CPAs, Directors of companies, owners of small businesses , Phd'S Scientists who have normal 8-5 jobs earning six figures. Now ,I understand there are those hustling and that is okay but to always report one side of the story for a "journalist" like Jeff to score points is irresponsible. There are many reasons why people just visit Kenya and not move to Kenya; spouses, kids ( enjoying the many free advantages for kids that Kenya can never offer ), lifestyles - not everyone is a Nyama choma, drinking person or show off in Malls( overrated), but love to have a community center with everything free on it including a gym , tennis courts, walking trails , neighborhood shopping center akin of the HUB, free Olympic size swimming pools, 911 and ambulances at the touch of the button etc. So to shallowly just have a 3 minute dialogue for laughs shows how immature Jeff Koinange is. Also , some folks yes are afraid to come back when they have not really created a haven for retirement which is equivalent to what they get here even in low / middle income neighborhoods. Some have medical reasons why they need to stay here to be taken care of- care they would never have in Kenya; speaking of which, why do all these rich people coming here for treatment if Kenya ni baba na mama. Jeff came here and left, comfortably adjusted in Kenya because his life was set since he was born, not everyone was born with a silver spoon and some find themselves having the obligation to stay here and uplift their relatives through their hustle. Why is Lupita Nyongo here still, is it because we have thriving Kenyawood industry that can accommodate her? Mmh Jeff answer that, why were you here working for CNN until you were fired and no one would hire you , not even a local station ? Folks like Jeff with their shallow outlook in life and simplifying situations are failures! And that whoever he is singing and enjoying the humor, were it not for his break ( he should thank his Karma), he would be filling green card forms every year and hoping he can get one way ticket from the hard life he had. So he needs to shut up - he is a few lucky Kenyans. A lot of Kenyans would love to be in our shoes. So Jeff Koinange since you started it, can you please have session about the Kenyans making it in USA but chose to still live in America because it provides 1000% more than you ever get in Kiambu, Parklands, Mountain view, Kitsusuru(sp) or even that Karen and looks at Kenya as play ground like Prince William or Harry? Thank you

FormerlyGuest2, I don’t have a bone with DMV whatsoever. It’s a nice place to live & work in & I actually come there every week biachara...what I am totally unable to wrap my head around is the air of pride / arrogance by some folks who live there (& by extension other big cities in the US....mimi naishi DC, naishi New York etc with an air of pride they do so). But in a way, I also understand - most folks were born & grew up someplace Mwisho Wa Lami in Kenya, surrounded by beautiful farmlands, livestock & mud during the rainy season & the last thing they wanted when they settled in these United States was anybody suggesting they settle in the country - inferiority complex at play here. I recently attended a function in DC, a fundraiser where all these professionals you are talking about participated. And one after another, during introductions, they crowed about being Engineers, doctors, lawyers, architects etc, bragging about what they have been doing for a living as the rest of us wildlife stared at them, wondering what such had to do with the biz at hand - harambee kusaidia familia fulani ilokuwa na matanga. Some of us started from up high in the corporate world, got disillusioned & humbly climbed down to the savanna where all herbivores reside. We don’t have to crow about it though ...Having said this, I saw Jeff’s video & immediately hit my ignore button. We are all different - and it’s all a matter of pursuing happiness best way each knows. Personally, I loathe formality & the control that goes with these professions. Some people don’t mind it and good for them. For some of us, we like it where we are & I really really don’t gv a f*#k what one does for a living as long as they have. We certainly don’t roll the same way sister. You giving Jeff too much attention is insulting your pretty good head (coz you have it, I know)

Sorry for the few arrogant professionals in DMV, I can assure you if you will ever meet me , hutaweza jua mimi hufanya nini ama sifanyi, nilitoka wapi ama sikutoka:-)...I stay away , away,( huko misituni he heh) from such crowds he heh by design BUT I hear you perfectly. I hear you as well , Jeff does not deserve this kind of attention but I guess I got carried away and got pissed at his arrogance and subjectivity. Next time niambie when you are neck of the wood:-).

Kenyans in USA to do not dance to the same tune. Our idiosyncrasies are as diverse as those you find in the whole of Kisumu or Nairobi.
If somebody in Kansas annoyed you, please do not use the same broad brush to smear Diaspora in Illinois,or FLorida...
Having said this, I think its infantile to go around thinking that since you are majuu you are better that Kenyans on the " mainland".
Remember even if you become a citizen,or hold a green card. Hapa si kwako. SO tread with humility. There are many Kenyans in diaspora(USA) who have totally wasted their opportunity to make something for themselves.while there are Kenyans who never got that opportunity and could have made the best of it. Most will agree with me that diaspora are seeking opportunities that are hard to come by in Kenya,or at the time of their departing, these opportunities were rare;and of course there are other reasons as well...
So let's respect each other knowing that we came from all different walks to arrive here in the USA.Yes some came easily via connections and rich families albeit weak scholastic arhievements. But we are here, let's respect one another, and not delve in one's business.Dont worry what I do, worry what you do. My two cents.

Man i don't know what kind of a job where people make six figures without a sweat. Take for example a retail pharmacist, salary in DC area is 120k but believe me you have to really sweat for it. You have to be on your feet all day from the punch in to punch out, sometimes no lunch and the sweating compensate for a bathroom break hence you may stay all day without one. Two three years , the knees are screaming. The high figure sometimes its not worthy. Its out of experience, i worked for CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreen, not a big difference between them. Just be satisfied and live a regular life since money will never be enough.

Let be real, knowledge is power and with knowledge you can fit in many places. Retail Pharmacy is not a job where you can do double like they do in nursing. I tell you you may think you can work at kaiser then go to 24 hour walgreen forget that or vice versa. The hectic environment plus excessive noise is way too exhausting. I do not regret a bit going for a doctorate. To me happiness is way better than anything else.

At those hating on Jeff, please watch the whole clip before demonizing the brother. Jalas is the one always taking a dig at diaporans (and I dare say with good reason sometimes). I am team Jeff on this one as I watched the whole clip days before this was pasted here. Overall, I found it hilarious! Further, people back home are entitled to their opinion, just like we bemoan about them here at Mwakilishi, c'mon now!

Yeah the whole video is hilarious and Jalas has a point and he is actually right to call out on diasporians behaviour. However, Jeff having lived in the US ought to know that not all diasporians do the so called "low paying jobs" and he SHOULD shed light on that being a journalist. He should always always be fair and balanced and he dropped the ball on this one. He should have spoken up. It is his responsibility to do so just like how his journalistic instincts kicked in when Miguna was being forced into the same plane he was.
