Kalonzo Compares Raila to Moses, Urges Opposition to Complete His Mission

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Kenya’s opposition to continue pursuing the democratic reforms championed by the late Raila Odinga, saying the country has yet to achieve the inclusive society the former Prime Minister envisioned.

Speaking during commemorative events in Bondo marking one year since Raila’s death, Kalonzo said the opposition must remain committed to expanding democratic space, strengthening representation and ensuring that all Kenyans have a voice in national affairs. He also revisited the idea of “Canaan”, a political metaphor Raila frequently used during his campaigns to describe the promise of national transformation.

Kalonzo said the vision remained unfulfilled and urged opposition leaders and supporters to continue working towards the changes Raila had advocated throughout his political career. Kalonzo said Raila’s involvement in politics was driven by a desire to strengthen democracy and address the concerns of ordinary citizens.

He urged opposition leaders to remain united, warning that internal divisions could weaken efforts to achieve the goals they had pursued together over the years. The Wiper leader highlighted Raila’s contribution to major political reforms, particularly the push for constitutional change and the expansion of devolved governance. He described these achievements as an important part of Kenya’s democratic development, extending beyond election campaigns and political alliances.

Kalonzo also recalled his long-standing political partnership with Raila, including their cooperation during disputed elections and other challenging periods for the opposition. He said the experiences had strengthened their political ties and created a shared responsibility to continue advancing the principles they had supported.

In one of his key remarks, Kalonzo compared Raila to Moses in the Bible, saying those who had worked alongside the former Prime Minister now had a responsibility to carry forward his vision. The comparison presented Raila as a leader whose influence could continue beyond his lifetime through the people and political movements that shared his ideals.

Kalonzo also thanked the Odinga family for welcoming opposition leaders during the anniversary events. He said their hospitality reflected the values Raila had promoted and described the gathering as an opportunity for leaders to remember their relationship with the former Prime Minister and reaffirm their shared political commitments.

Turning to the younger generation, Kalonzo urged young people to take an active role in democratic processes, exercise their constitutional rights and demand accountability from public institutions. He said continued public participation would be important in advancing the principles Raila had championed.
