Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has paid an emotional tribute to his younger brother, Raila Odinga, saying their bond remains strong despite his death a year ago.

The anniversary, which fell on Thursday, 15 October, also marked Oburu’s birthday.

In a statement released on Thursday, Oburu reflected on the significance of sharing his birthday with the anniversary of Raila’s death, describing the coincidence as a lasting reminder of their close relationship.

He said their bond extended beyond family ties, having been shaped by years of shared experiences, personal friendship and political involvement. Oburu added that physical separation could not erase the connection they had built over their lifetime.

Oburu missed the anniversary commemorations at Migwena Cultural Centre in Bondo, Siaya County, because of health concerns. However, his message conveyed his continued attachment to Raila and his support for those who gathered to honour the former Prime Minister.

Photographs shared alongside the statement showed the senator celebrating his 83rd birthday with family members, friends and medical staff at Nairobi Hospital, where he is recovering. The images included a cake-cutting ceremony attended by people supporting him during his recuperation.

Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, addressed concerns about Oburu’s absence during the commemorations, assuring mourners that he was recovering and following medical advice. She explained that doctors had recommended that he avoid the large public gathering because of its expected size and activity.

In a separate message delivered by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Oburu said his doctors had instructed him to rest and suspend public appearances temporarily to support his recovery. He nevertheless reaffirmed his commitment to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying his thoughts remained with the party and its political agenda.

The senator also expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his recovery and helped organise his birthday celebration. He thanked his spouses, medical staff at Nairobi Hospital, ODM members, domestic staff and organisers at Pawaa Centre for arranging the surprise celebration.

Raila died in India on 15 October 2025, aged 80, bringing to an end a political career that spanned several decades and played a central role in Kenya’s opposition politics and democratic reform efforts. His first death anniversary brought together family members, political leaders and ODM supporters in Siaya County to reflect on his legacy.
