Two Suspects Arraigned Over Killing of Psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso

Two people have appeared before the Milimani Law Courts in connection with the killing of clinical psychologist and researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso. 

Prosecutors have asked the court to detain the suspects for 30 days while investigations continue. Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Chris Mulwa, were arraigned on 31 July after prosecutors applied for custodial detention to allow detectives more time to complete their inquiries. 

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is examining whether the fatal shooting was linked to a series of threats and incidents that Dr Mutiso had reported before her death. Dr Mutiso, a respected mental health specialist, had previously reported two separate incidents to the authorities. 

She alleged that she was assaulted at her home in Mlolongo and later confronted by an armed man during a traffic incident. Investigators are reviewing both reports to establish whether they were connected to her killing and whether the attack was planned.

According to preliminary police reports, Dr Mutiso was shot on the morning of 29 July while travelling to work in a taxi. Investigators say a dark-coloured vehicle intercepted the taxi along Mbagathi Road before a gunman approached and fired at close range, fatally shooting her as she sat in the rear passenger seat. 

The attacker fled the scene. Early findings suggest Dr Mutiso may have been followed from her home, strengthening investigators' belief that the attack was carefully planned.

The court appearance of Rose and Chris Mulwa marks a key stage in the investigation, although detectives say their inquiries are still at an early stage.
