Kenyans in India Granted Visa Extensions, Overstay Penalties Waived

India has introduced emergency visa measures for Kenyans and other foreign nationals stranded in the country due to travel disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, 18 March, the High Commission of India in Nairobi said visas approaching expiry will be extended by one month at no cost. The measure applies to both regular visas and e-visas.

The decision follows widespread flight cancellations and airspace restrictions associated with the conflict in Iran. Direct flights between Nairobi and Mumbai have been suspended, while airlines operating across Asia have rerouted services, leading to longer travel times and reduced cargo capacity.

The commission stated that visa extensions will be processed individually by India’s Foreigners Regional Registration Offices. Penalties for overstaying after 28 February will be waived for travellers unable to leave because of the disruption. Exit permits will also be issued free of charge.

Officials added that individuals who do not apply for extensions or exit permits during this period will not be treated as immigration offenders under the temporary arrangements. Foreign nationals arriving in India on diverted flights will be eligible for Temporary Landing Permits, also issued without charge.
