KWS to Compensate Siaya Resident Who Killed Python After Dog Attack
The Kenya Wildlife Service has agreed to compensate a Siaya County resident who killed a python after it attacked and killed his dog.
The incident occurred on 29 December in Ugunja, Siaya County. The man, identified locally as Osore, intervened when the snake wrapped itself around his pet. After the encounter, he transported both the dead dog and the python by bicycle to Sigomere Police Station.
Senior KWS officials later visited Osore’s home to assess the incident. Grace Kariuki, the Senior Warden for Siaya County, said the service was satisfied with how the matter was handled, particularly his decision to hand over the python to authorities. She noted that python skins are classified as state property under wildlife law.
Kariuki confirmed that compensation forms had been issued, explaining that the case involved an attack by a wild animal. She said the visit was intended to support the affected resident and ensure proper procedures were followed.
Osore welcomed the compensation pledge but raised concerns about delays in emergency responses to wildlife incidents. He said residents often struggle to get immediate assistance when dangerous animals pose a threat.
Kariuki said KWS has trained officers who handle snakes and other wildlife, and that captured reptiles are usually relocated to Ndere Island National Park. She urged residents to contact KWS hotlines instead of killing wildlife.
