Death at a Wedding: Six People Die After Septic Tank Caves in

Six individuals have lost their lives after a well collapsed in the Kihunguro area of Kiambu County.

The tragedy occurred within a family compound and the victims were among a group of seventeen people who had stopped at a friend's residence on their way to a wedding ceremony. While singing and dancing, the structure covering the well gave way, causing those on top to fall in.

"Concrete that covered the water well later collapsed due to the weight of the said persons, and as a result, over 17 persons drowned. Responders were mobilised and 17 retrieved including 2 children who were taken to a hospital in Ruiru for medical attention," Police Spokesperson Dr Resila Atieno said in a statement.

Unfortunately, two children who were supposed to participate in the wedding ceremony were among the fatalities. Emergency services were able to rescue some of the family members, but the collapse was too great for others to survive.  A statement from the National Police Service had earlier reported that a rescue operation was underway at Ruiru where the concrete well had collapsed.

Those who survived were given Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by police officers and health officers from Kiambu County. The injured were then taken to a hospital in Kiambu for urgent medical attention. Dr Resila advised the public to be cautious when placing weight on concrete wells in the future to avoid potential collapses.

Pole sana Andu a KiaHiti village for loosing your loved ones. But YES poop katiba voters must explain why they applied feces instead of brains and to vote for more funds on luxurious recurrent expenditure than development.So-called katiba drafters photocopied the US constitution but forgot the US is made of 50 countries. They only changed on expenditure to create jobs for elite gangsters including nominated prostitutes(in the name of gender equality).I wish the 6.5m.fools knew Atlanta city’s 600 000 residents have 35 fire stations but Ruiru’s 600 000 have only one fire engine.Lives could have been saved If the idiot voters funded more on rescue instead of hiring a governor/deputy,senator,13 MPigs,60 MCAs plus 27 escorts etc.

Pole sana! Those concrete covered surfaces on top of sewers are danger zones. In our first year of Secondary School, a fellow student stepped on one to avoid walking along wet grass, and it caved in. She was able to hold to the sides until she pulled herself out. When she described what she saw glancing down inside the big hole, it traumatized many of us. It was a huge sewer hole for a # of dorms.

Very sad indeed.@ Licilici, a situation like the one you have mentioned should provide lessons for many schools, and residential places. This one was a wake up call... What may seem structurally sound to untrained eyes should be comfirmed by a trained eye. Some structure cannot take certain weights, and unless notified, its not easy to tell.Obviously that's why lifts in buildings have maximum weight conspicously displayed.
Sewers collapsing under people's weight is arare thing, but one is one too many. Some of these accidents can be prevented by enforcing certain building codes plus clear warnings on materials and packages on how to use them safely. And avoid using short cuts to cut costs.Could prove deadly in the long run. What I have said here is pretty much common sense. So why does it happen? Iam sure many would understand if an accident occured after all humanly possible measures have been taken...
