Jubilee Party Nominates President Uhuru’s Sister Kristina Pratt to the Senate

The Jubilee Party has submitted the name of President Kenyatta's elder sister Kristina Wambui Pratt for Senate nomination.

Kristina, 70, is named in the Senate nomination list alongside Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu, Uasin Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar, Gender Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Linah Jebii Kilimo, and Kenyan ambassador to Iran Rukia Ahmed Subo Muhamed, according to a gazette notice by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday.

The ruling party’s Chairman Nelson Dzuya has also been nominated for a slot in the National Assembly alongside Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege and Alex Matere, who serves in the Azimio Presidential Campaign Team.

There are 12 nomination slots in the National Assembly and 20 in the Senate, including 16 that are directly set aside for women. Two slots are set aside for youth representatives (male and female) and two others for persons with disability (male and female).

The nomination slots are shared out to political parties based on the number of seats they secure in the National Assembly and Senate. Parties are required to submit their nominations lists to the electoral commission before the general election.

During its 51st graduation ceremony on July 22nd, Kenyatta University awarded Kristina a Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) degree in recognition of her commitment and service to people living with disabilities.

Kristina, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Kutztown State University, and a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology from Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA, is a special education teacher by profession.

She joined the Ministry of Education in 1975 where she became the founding Director of the Department of Special Education, playing a major role in the establishment of the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

In 2002, Pratt was appointed as the Chair of the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya, a position she still holds to date. She is credited with driving the fund’s portfolio from about Sh370 million when she took over to over Sh3.5 billion as of 2020.

She also serves as a board member of Kambui School for the Deaf, Jacaranda School for the Mentally Handicapped, Kenya Society for the Blind, and Thika School for the Blind.
