Raila Pledges to Ban Mitumba Clothes If Elected President

Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga has revealed plans to ban the importation of second-hand clothes, commonly known as mitumba, if he ascends to power this year.

Odinga, who is giving his fifth try at the presidency, says his administration will revive the country’s textile industries to enable traders of second-hand clothes to market locally manufactured products.

Speaking during the unveiling of his manifesto at Nyayo Stadium on Monday night, the ODM party leader pointed out that Kenya’s textile industry was killed through liberalization, which led to the importation of mitumba products.

“Our people are only wearing clothes coming from outside the country which have been worn by people who are dead. We are going to go to primary production so that our people who are importing mitumba can have good products to sell here,” Odinga stated.

He pledged to ensure that importers of used clothes get the first hand to market and sell locally manufactured products in the country.

“I’m saying that we are not moving anybody out of business. We will ensure that those who are importing mitumba get the firsthand to market goods that are going to be manufactured here in this country. We will get the cotton, jinn it here, spin it here and make finished products here,” he added.

Odinga, 77, noted that this will create millions of jobs for Kenyan farmers and the youths.

One problem I have with politicians, especially from African countries is that they embellish the truth,or outrightly lie. Take the hyperbolic statement from Odinga that,"...which have been worn by dead people". Dont we Kenyans wear clothes of our dead relatives? What is the difference? Granted that ,yes some of the clothes are from dead people, there are just as many that are donated as Americans gain or shade weight to fit into new clothes.
As for textile industries being revived and creating millions of jobs,I ask Raila, why as it not been done as of yet?Is it because he was not the president? These political lies to garner votes are not new. Before you cast your vote for any politician, find out how long he /she has been in politics, and what they have done.Of course you may have your own reasons for voting for aparticular candidate, but if they have so far produced nothing, surely that's a track record to consider,if you want change.

@Maxiley you bring up a good point "if they have so far produced nothing, surely that's a track record to consider,if you want change"
Ruto's track record is Kimwarer and Arror. And lets not forget those kids who were promised laptops in 2013 campaign, the youth who were promised Stadiums.
Raila needs to have policy in place to put money in the pockets of mwananchi. Once people do well they wean themselves of these Mitumbas.

Mūgîkūyū’s Raila has many known records starting in 1972 when he acquired a lecturer’s job at UON by presenting a fake mechanical engineering certificate to expired Karanja, the then VC only to be ejected by students the same day.He was then installed by expired Kamau as director at KEB where he started clearing all types of substandard products at KK fee.The savage led thousands of Kenyans to death in 1982 abortive coup.He joined Moi in looting and grabbing sprees and was licensed to sell methanol to Mountainians youth even today. He then killed 1300 Kenyans in 07/08 PEV but joined expired Kibaki in looting and grabbing 500000 acres in Lamu where he killed 89 Gîkūyū land owners. He also imported poisonous maize from SA which is still killing thousands to this day.

@ Mugukuyu, talking to stadiums, athletes are asking,"where are the 9 stadiums that were promised"? Once in power, the promises are forgotten, and the voters go back to their back breaking work, and life goes on till next election period, for another basket of lies.

I like and respect Raila but I think this is a promise he will not be able to fulfil. Kagame of Rwanda tried to do away with mitumba in his country and the American government put him in a tight corner he had to back off. This is like promising he will nationalize those big tracks of ranches disguised as nature conservatories owned by descendants of former colonialists. Look what the British government did to Mugabe's economy after he nationalized settlers' farms.

Mitumba are so nice. You get high quality clothes in mitumba which many people cannot afford when new. People do not put chapatis/viraka on clothes anymore because of mitumba.

Just lost votes! Maybe he has no clue about how many households rely on mitumba. He needs to be told that mitumba is also sold & worn in the countries of origin.

Take a tour to Family store or Goodwill and change the mind-set. Solution is to expand textile mfg. companies, not issuance of a blanket ban on certain clothes.

This man is living in a unilateral pipe dream. Mitumba is a way of life in Kenya, in Africa. It’s a means of income for many families. Shutting down the importation of these clothes will scramble the economy. Not everyone can afford fancy new clothes like you Raila. Name a country besides North Korea that solely wear inland made clothes.

IRIMU ICI THURAI II RAGAI Raila AMUNYARIRE.Muuaji Raila will be continuing with what jambazi Uhuru started.Uhuru has already forced many of his tribesmen to close their businesses in Nairobi.Remember the savage violently grabbed rental houses owned by AGikuyu individuals in 2008 and gave them to some of his Luo worshippers. There is no way the demon can start or revive any industry including textile one because of high production costs.

There are some markets that we should not interfere with. You do not ban; instead you impose tariffs (taxes). What will you do with the millions of Kenyans who depend on Mitumbas? Have them walk around naked? Think again.

Read Nation and the idiot has somersaulted and denied he said so. Let me reminded him that Biden would be calling soon to clarify. He should know that Kenya and other shit- holes do import trash/ garbage from the USA, leave alone mutumba, but " takataka" and nobody has ever raised an issue lest they get denied visa for all their generations alive and to be alive from permanently stepping to the real " Canaan", the USA.
