Korean National Loses Sh2.9 Million in a Fake Gold Scam in Nairobi

Four Kenyans and a Cameroonian national have been arrested for allegedly defrauding a foreigner in a fake gold scam.

The suspects include Robinson Gitau (35), Livai Kombo (39), Fatuma Mohammed (28), Eva Kimotho (36), and 36-year-old Cameroonian man Utia Kugi.

They are accused of swindling Korean Song Sung of Sh2.9 million on the pretext that they would sell him genuine gold. Song was directed to a company known as Ekweme enterprises in Nairobi's Karen estate where he was shown the supposed gold.

The victim was reportedly led to the establishment by proxies believed to have been working in cahoots with the fraudsters, who disappeared immediately after receiving the money.

Serious crimes detectives launched a probe into the incident after Song filed a complaint with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Upon completion of investigations, detectives lured the five suspects into a trap and arrested all of them.

Boxes containing fake gold bars concealed in steel boxes were recovered during the operation. The five suspects are in custody awaiting arraignment in court.

Following an increase in similar cases in the recent past, DCI has warned foreigners intending to venture into the gold business to be on the lookout for fraudsters out to defraud them.

This is a case of buyer be aware! The so called fraudsters will claim to be business men who believed the merchandize was true gold. Prosecution must proof intent. The Korean national should also be arraigned in court and charged with stupidty and lack of respect for KSh2.9 million.
