Missing Lawyer Prof. Hassan Nandwa Found Alive in Kitui

Missing lawyer Prof. Hassan Nandwa has been found, nearly two weeks after his disappearance.

Nandwa, who was reportedly abducted by unknown people in Nairobi on October 28th, was found dumped in Mwingi, Kitui County.

His family says the Muslim scholar was found alive but shaken and has been brought to Nairobi for a medical check-up. Nandwa told his family that he was dumped in a bush at midnight by unknown people.

On the day he was kidnapped, Nandwa had reported the disappearance of his client Elgiva Bwire, who went missing as soon as he was released on completion of his jail term. Bwire, a confessed member of the al-Shabaab terror group, is still missing.

Bwire was imprisoned after he was found guilty of involvement in the October 24th, 2011 terror attack at Kaka bus station along Race Course Road. His appeal saw his life sentence reduced to 10 years in prison.

Last week, High Court judge Anthony Mrima ordered the police to produce Nandwa and Bwire in court within 24 hours, following a habeas corpus application filed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

The judge further directed telecommunications company Safaricom to supply the court and LSK with Prof. Nandwa’s phone call records.

But police denied knowledge of their whereabouts, saying they were investigating their disappearances.

Nandwa’s family believed he was in the hands of police officers following a raid in their home by people who identified themselves as police officers on the day he disappeared. The alleged police officers reportedly stormed the scholar’s home in search of Bwire.
