Kenya, UK Form Joint Team to Probe Agnes Wanjiru’s Murder

Kenya and the UK have formed a joint team to investigate the death of Agnes Wanjiru, who was allegedly murdered by a British soldier in Nanyuki nine years ago. 

This follows Friday’s meeting between Kenya’s Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti and Brigadier Ronnie Westerman, the Defense Advisor to the British High Commission in Nairobi.

A team of Kenyan homicide detectives led by Martin Nyuguto is expected to travel to the UK, where they will jointly with the British National Crime Agency interrogate and identify suspects and witnesses to the murder.

The joint team will not only target junior soldiers alleged to have been present on the night Wanjiru was killed, but also high-ranking officials believed to have conspired to cover up the murder.

A public inquest into Wanjiru’s murder by Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku in 2019 revealed that the 21-year-old sex worker was killed by a British soldier training in Kenya.

Wanjiru’s body was found in a septic tank at Lions Court Hotel in Nanyuki, two months after she disappeared on March 31st, 2012. On that night, she was at the hotel where tens of British soldiers were drinking beer, dancing, and having sex with local women. 

She reportedly left the seating area in the company of one of the British soldiers and that was the last time she was seen alive. Wanjiru left behind a five-month-old daughter.
