MP Babu Owino on the Spot for Threatening Citizen TV Journalist

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is on the spot for allegedly threatening Citizen TV news editor Muraya Kariuki.

The MP is reported to have phoned and sent threatening messages to the journalist, accusing him of airing negative news about ODM leader Raila Odinga.

On Tuesday, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) demanded that the MP withdraws the threats and issue an apology to the editor, terming his actions as intimidation and a major infringement on press freedom.

“As the protector of media freedom in Kenya the Media Council of Kenya demands that the MP withdraws the threats and issues an appropriate apology to the journalist and the media fraternity,” MCK said in a statement.

MCK further urged the politician to file any media grievances with the Media Complaints Commission, which is legally mandated to handle such matters under section 27 of the Media Council Act and issue appropriate remedies.

“The Media Council of Kenya condemns any actions by politicians to threaten journalists as they undertake their rightful duties. We urge politicians and leaders to uphold decorum in engaging with the media; to promote positive dialogue as we get into the electioneering period,” the council added.

@ Mugikuyu, it appears that character, and integrity does not count in Kenya politics. He is just one of many who score very poorly on the "richter" scare of integrity.Like they say, you get what you vote for...

@Korakanini and @Maxiley, someone said our politicians are a clear reflection of the voters. Question is are voters thugs and hyenas? The answer would be a resounding yes( for the most part), otherwise how can you explain the 2Billion loss? Kila mtu anakula akipata nafasi.

We got here because we the voters were allow the crooked politicians to screw us! We have not yet matured to a level we can stand on our own! Those we elect know this simple fact far too well because they used to be “us” before we elected them! Can I also say there is something stupidly wrong with black people! We cover up those who steal and do bad things! The white folks rarely cover up a crime! They understand the law better than we do!

@ Tommy, by trying to respond, you have even raised more questions:
1.Did the voters know that they were voting for crooks
2.How could we not correct ourselves before each election circle, and vote the right fellows in?
3.What level of maturity are we on,and how long will it take for us to mature?
4.Do all countries go through this "maturity process?
I could go on and on,but if you can answer these four,I to my satisfactory,I will add more.

Babu Owino threatening Citizen TV editor? Why wouldn't he? This hooligan shot an innocent DJ Evolve through the neck nearly killing him -and forever destroying his life without any consequences! The elite criminals are the most dangerous animals in our society. They maim and kill with impunity. In a banana republic, such as ours, these decadents roam large as there is no uncorrupt, respectable and moral judicially for restrain.

How does Muraya and his media council expect apology and withdraw of threats from ABOVE THE LAW GANGSTER,Ongili? It is TOTAL RUBBISH as Ongili receives direct orders from muuaji Raila. How can they expect remorse from a murderer who shot and paralyzed his tribesman,Orina in an attempt to kill him?Babu enjoys protection from Uhuru/Raila and Muraya & Co should have started procuring a coffin as Owino will strike at any moment.Muraya has a chance of taking refuge at any western embassy en route to asylum.MUREFU UTAUWAWA NA UPOTEE.

One of his mentors is the usual candidate whom we saw harden his heart & call for more 'protests' while his followers were cutting people's arms & wrecking havoc in Kibera, Mathare etc in '07.

Not me. I've never been amused by that guy's politics or supported him. Firstly, he's obsessed with being in power(see, guy has been always on the ballot in almost every election year). Secondly, he thrives on skirmishes. Kenya will be a better place when he retires.

The likes of Kenneth and Kivutha would make a good pres., maybe. Or atleast, they'd bring in a fresh feel on the scene. I would vote them.

Neither Ruto nor Rao & the entire Nasa would have my vote.(They were team in '07 when the latter incited his supporters into violence anyway!)

Also i wouldn't support a son of a former pres., in this case Nyayo (hii mambo ya dynasty inachosha). We need new people on the scene.

Kenyans vote for the politicians who are like them! Please don’t blame Babu for acting stupid! He is representing every voter who cast a vote for him and that is how they expect him to behave!

What is the difference between this thug and DP Ruto?! Pretty much nothing! They are both stupid idiots backed up by senseless young thieves who gets a gay acting moronic on the streets!

He needs to go!

Ruto ia a thief and therefore not right for the presidency. But Babu's kind of personality cult is why Raila also loses appeal. A Kenya under Raila would be like four years of America first... You cannot even criticize the dude despite his demagoguery.
