Matiang'i Summoned to Parliament over Deputy President Ruto's Security

A parliamentary committee has summoned Interior CS Fred Matiang’i over Deputy President William Ruto’s security.
Matiang’i is required to appear before the National Assembly Administration and National Security Committee on Wednesday to shed light on the changes made to Ruto’s security last week.
The House team argues that the withdrawal of General Service Unit (GSU) officers guarding the deputy president’s residences is a matter of national security.
“The Committee has noted with concern the ongoing discourse around the security of the Deputy President more specifically, the withdrawal of General Service Unit Officers manning his residences and the subsequent deployment of Administration Police Officers…this matter is of national security concern and needs to be inquired into and put to rest,” National Assembly clerk Michael Sialai said in a letter.
Ruto termed the summons issued to Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyamba as a waste of parliamentary time.
“Parliamentary time should not be wasted on non-issues. The Administration Police is a professional security service and those who think it’s a downgrade are wrong. Parliament should instead focus on deployment to serious security situations in areas where bandits are causing mayhem & destruction,” Ruto said through Twitter on Tuesday morning.
On Monday, Ruto formally welcomed the new security team posted to his official residence in Karen, Nairobi.
