Kiunjuri Warns Uhuru Against Extending His Stay in Power
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has warned President Kenyatta against extending his stay in power.
Speaking on Saturday, Kiunjuri vowed to oppose any attempts by the president to cling to power beyond August 2022.
Kiunjuri, who is the leader of The Service Party (TSP), stated that the Constitution allows the president to serve for a maximum of two five-year terms.
“You must leave office for the next president come August 2022. The Constitution is clear and therefore, we won’t allow you to extend your stay in office,” said Kiunjuri.
Kiunjuri said they will soon move to the Supreme Court to seek an advisory on whether the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) “can be a good excuse to extend the life of this government.”
At the same time, Kiunjuri accused President Kenyatta’s administration of misplaced priorities such as the BBI and construction of the expressway yet Kenyans are starving.
Kiunjuri has been a fierce critic of President Kenyatta since he was fired from Cabinet in January last year.
Following his dismissal, he accused Kenyatta of deceiving and dumping him after convincing him not to vie for the Laikipia governor seat in 2017.
“I was ready to rejoin politics and vie for the governor seat in Laikipia County in the 2017 general elections. I was told not to vie for the position.”
“Out of the request by the president, I willingly obliged. Under very unclear circumstances I am now out of the cabinet and must wait for years for another election to happen. I am now jobless and the status will remain for the next two years. No one would like to be in my current state,” said Kiunjuri.
