The signature collection drive for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2020 has come to an end.
BBI Secretariat co-chairs Junet Mohamed and Dennis Waweru announced that 5.2 million signatures had been collected by Friday morning.
The secretariat is expected to process the signatures within three days before submitting them to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for verification and approval.
“We have collected 5.2 million signatures by this (Friday) morning. These signatures will be processed within 3 days and a form will be presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for validation,” Waweru said.
The team said it expects IEBC to complete signature authentication within two weeks and exuded confidence that the referendum process will be smooth.
“We don’t expect challenges with the IEBC since we earlier engaged the commission on the format that they will use to present the signatures for verification,” Waweru said.
ODM leader Raila Odinga hailed Kenyans for endorsing the bill in urge numbers and urged IEBC to move with speed and verify the signatures.
“Let IEBC move fast and release the process to the next stage which is county assemblies, then to Parliament before it goes to the people to have a final say.”
“I know Kenyans are not slow learners when it comes to changing the way they are governed and they have spoken,” he said.
Odinga slammed Deputy President William Ruto for calling for the BBI consensus and holding the referendum alongside the 2022 general election.
“They opposed it when there was a time for them to give their views only to come now and say they want consensus.”
“The election itself has many seats and IEBC is proposing it should be staggered so adding another referendum question will be too much for the voter,” Odinga added.

We Kenyans are a very gullible lot & it’s no wonder politicians of all shades & colors ride roughshod over us, raping us repeatedly but we still sing their tune. How can any sane Kenyan be concerned with this BBI bs when the country is clearly in a crisis? As Prof Lumumba recently quipped, we could be on the path to decline & destruction & no amount of reason can help matters. Let’s all reflect individually & strive to do the right thing wherever we are even as we fight the pack of hyenas we call politicians in Kenya
I am 100 percent with you Mlachake Kenyans even the well educated are all the same, they follow like sheep to the slaughter house. Before you hang me out to dry, I still LOVE Kenya and Kenyans of good faith but the selfish corrupt ones I do not care about.
WACHA WAKENYA FEEL THE PAIN TO THE END.
WE NEED TO WAKE UP.
BUT MIA BILI BILI IS WHAT PUT THESE LEADERS THERE PLUS MUNDU WA NYUMBA MENTALITY.
WELL THEY ARE REAPING WHAT THEY PLANTED.
SO TUWACHE UJINGA NA TUAMKE.
Only mad people/Kenyans like Shiama support BBI.How can a normal person vote to expand the govt through the BUILDING BILLIONAIRES INITIATIVE in a poor country like Kenya where food is luxury for 50% of population?I wish all MATHARE HOSIPTAL doctors led by Dr.Gitau Njenga and Prof Lukoye started a random field mental check up for the 5.2m signatories.Gitau should start with his rural home market,Wangige while Lukoye should find out why his father,Atwoli behaves like WaKanyugi.
Prof Lukoye can't participate in the mental checkups because he's Atwoli's son.
That is why the pyschiarate should evaluate WaKanyugi & above the law murderer,Atwoli first.
Can someone ( anyone) tell DP Ruto the BBI train has already left the station and traveled 3/4 of the way to its intended destination?
It is totally immaterial Whether Ruto vote or fail to vote for BBI. As a matter of facts, it is best situation if he does not vote now!
Kenyans are pretty tired of a indecisive fence sitting DP who only cares about his own stomach than doing what is morally right for the general public.
