Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa Arrested over Corruption Allegations
Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa has been arrested over alleged involvement in corruption.
Jumwa was apprehended after she surrendered herself to Port Police Station in Mombasa on Sunday and is set to be arraigned in court on Monday.
On Thursday, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered the arrest and prosecution of Jumwa and six other suspects over the embezzlement of Malindi Constituency Development Funds (CDF) amounting to Sh19 million.
Haji said investigations revealed that Jumwa received Sh2.5 million from Multserve Contractors Limited, a company awarded a Sh19 million tender for construction of Malindi Sub-County Education Office.
“This amounted to a conflict of interest,” said DPP Haji in a statement.
Juma allegedly concealed the said money, being proceeds of crime, through depositing an installment towards the purchase of an apartment along Argwings Kodhek Road in Nairobi, according to Haji.
Jumwa’s co-accused are Wachu Omar Abdalla (Malindi CDF Account Manager), and members of the Malindi Tender Evaluation Committee Kennedy Otieno Onyango, Bernard Riba Kai, Sophia Saidi Charo, and Margaret Faith Kalume. The sixth suspect is Robert Katana Wanje, a director of Multserve Contractors Limited.
The six were arrested and paraded in court on Friday with the prosecution telling the court that Jumwa could not be traced.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti directed Jumwa to surrender to the police before Monday.
The suspects were charged with various offenses including forgery, fraud in procurement, and money laundering. They pleaded not guilty and were released on Sh10 million bond with a surety of a similar amount with an alternative cash bail of Sh5 million each.
